Product Description in English.

Sugar Cane Men's Vintage-Inspired Wabash Stripe Work Vest (Waistcoat), 9 oz. 100% Cotton Wabash Stripe Front and 11 oz. Denim Back, Unlined and Unpadded, Made in Japan (SC12654, 421A One-Wash)

Sugar Cane

This men's Wabash stripe work vest is made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a Toyo Enterprises brand specializing in vintage-inspired American workwear. Drawing on the practical construction of classic American work vests and waistcoats, this model combines a 9 oz. indigo Wabash stripe front with an 11 oz. solid indigo denim back, both made from 100% cotton. Fine white dots arranged in vertical rows give the front its characteristic striped appearance, while the denim back introduces a different weave and surface texture. The design incorporates a deep V-neck, four black-painted metal tack buttons, three exterior double-welt pockets, an interior pocket, a pocket watch chain hole, pointed front hems, and a rear cinch strap with a metal buckle. A one-wash finish softens the initial feel while preserving the body of both fabrics. Its slightly slim silhouette and relatively short length keep the proportions compact, while the unlined construction without insulating fill allows it to be layered over shirts and T-shirts or beneath jackets and coats across a range of seasons. These materials and functional details bring the character of traditional workwear into a vest suited to everyday casual wear.

Size and Fit Guide:

Gender: Men.

The vest has a clean, slightly slim fit, with restrained width through the body and a relatively short body length. When layered over a shirt or T-shirt, it is designed to follow the torso naturally from the chest toward the waist, creating a compact overall balance. The shoulder sections do not extend far over the shoulder tips, and the deep V-neck leaves the neckline and shoulder areas of the garment underneath visible.

The front hem forms a downward-pointing tip on each side, with the lower edges rising diagonally toward the sides of the vest. An inverted-V opening separates the two front points, while the back has a straight, square-cut hem. Tightening the rear cinch strap draws in the waist for a closer fit and changes the shape of the lower body. The fabrics gradually soften and settle through wear and washing. These proportions work both as an outer vest over a shirt or T-shirt and as a layer beneath a jacket or coat.

The sizing of this vest is generally closer to Japanese men's sizing than to standard U.S./EU sizing. As a result, the Japanese letter size may fit somewhat smaller than the same letter size from many U.S. or European brands. As an approximate reference, Tagged Size 38 (M) would generally correspond to U.S./EU men's sizes S to M, approximately U.S. sizes 36 to 38 or EU sizes 46 to 48. This conversion is intended only as a general guide, since the appropriate size will also depend on body proportions, preferred fit, and the thickness of the clothing worn underneath.

Because fit varies with body type, layering, and personal preference, please use the actual garment measurements below as your primary reference. Please measure a similar vest that fits you well and compare its chest width, back length, and shoulder width with those listed below. Allow enough room for the shirt or T-shirt you intend to wear underneath, and use the same measuring points for the most useful comparison.

Our model wears Tagged Size 38. He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. He typically wears a size S in U.S. and European brands, approximately a U.S. size 36.

The following measurements are taken from the garment itself laid flat, not from the wearer's body. Width is the flat chest width measured from side to side; it is not the full chest circumference or the wearer's chest measurement. Length is measured down the center back and does not include the pointed front hem tips.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

All measurements are taken with the front buttons fastened and the vest laid flat without stretching the fabric.

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Measured straight across the vest from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the bottom of the armholes.

Length (Back Body Length): Measured from the upper edge of the back neckline at its center, where it sits at the back of the neck, straight down the center back to the bottom of the rear hem. The pointed front hem tips are not included in this measurement.

Shoulder (Shoulder Width): With the vest laid flat, measured straight across from the upper end of one armhole to the upper end of the other.

Made in Japan.
- Brand new, in unused condition.
- All measurements are taken by hand with the garment laid flat, using a measuring tape.
- Slight variations may occur between individual garments and depending on the measuring method or how the fabric is positioned.
- Actual color may vary slightly from the photos due to lighting conditions and individual screen settings.

9 oz. Cotton Wabash Stripe Front with a Discharge-Printed Pattern
The front body is made from 9 oz. Wabash stripe fabric woven from 100% cotton. Wabash stripes are associated with traditional American work clothing, including garments worn by railroad workers, and their fine dotted lines give this vest a characteristic vintage workwear appearance.

The pattern is formed by discharge printing on indigo-dyed fabric. This process selectively removes color from the dyed cloth to create small white dots, which are arranged in vertical rows. The contrast between the deep navy ground and the fine white dots defines the stripes while preserving the visible character of the underlying fabric.

At 9 oz., the front fabric is relatively light for workwear cloth while retaining moderate crispness and body. It also has enough suppleness to bend naturally during wear, balancing a defined shape with flexibility for layering.

11 oz. Indigo Denim Back with Gray-Toned Weft Yarns
The back body is made from lightweight 11 oz. denim woven from 100% cotton. Indigo-dyed warp yarns run lengthwise through the fabric, while gray-toned weft yarns run across them. Small portions of the gray weft remain visible between the indigo warp yarns, producing subtle tonal variation and a heathered appearance within the weave.

The surface also shows slight irregularities in the yarns and weave, fine fibers, and uneven shades of indigo. Together, these features give the denim depth and texture within its subdued overall color. The gently mottled appearance and natural surface variation contribute to the rustic, rugged character associated with vintage workwear.

Contrasting Front and Back Fabrics with an Unlined Interior
The striped Wabash front and solid indigo denim back give the vest distinctly different surfaces when viewed from the front and rear. The contrast comes from both the pattern and the individual texture of each woven fabric.

The vest is constructed without a separate lining or insulating fill. Its single-layer body construction leaves the reverse of the fabrics and the interior construction details visible, with additional layers used locally for facings, reinforcement, and pockets. This arrangement allows the vest to be combined with different shirts and outer layers across a range of seasons.

One-Wash Finish and Gradual Fabric Development
The vest is washed once during the finishing process. This initial wash softens the stiffness of the fabrics while leaving enough body to maintain their shape, giving the garment a more settled feel from the first wear.

Compared with an unwashed garment, the one-wash finish reduces the likelihood of substantial initial shrinkage. Some further dimensional change may still occur, depending on washing and drying conditions and differences between individual garments. With repeated wear and washing, both the Wabash fabric and the denim gradually develop their own surface character and feel.

Collarless V-Neck
The neckline is cut into a deep V without a fold-over collar. The upper front edges slope inward toward the area around the first button, creating an open frame around the shirt or T-shirt worn underneath.

This shape leaves the underlying garment's neckline visible and works with the compact shoulder sections to define the upper outline of the vest.

Four Black-Painted Metal Tack Buttons
The front closes with four black-painted metal tack buttons. The buttons are fixed through the fabric on the wearer's right front edge, and corresponding horizontal buttonholes are positioned on the wearer's left.

Each button face has a recessed center surrounded by fine raised and recessed details arranged in concentric rings. The textured metal surfaces and dark painted finish give the closure the practical appearance of classic workwear hardware.

Layered Front Facings and Reinforced Back Neckline
The fabric along each front opening edge is arranged in two layers and secured with stitching. Stitching follows the inner edge of the facing from the neckline down to the front hem, holding the fabric layered on the inside against the body of the vest.

This construction reinforces the areas around the buttons and buttonholes, which are handled repeatedly when the vest is opened and closed. The added fabric also helps limit stretching and distortion along the front opening.

An additional fabric layer is sewn to the inside of the back neckline. Stitching along its edge secures this reinforcement around the neck opening and helps support the shape of the upper back edge.

Pointed Front Hems and a Square-Cut Back Hem
Each front panel ends in a downward-pointing tip, with the hem rising diagonally from that point toward the side of the vest. The two tips are separated at the center front by an inverted-V opening, creating the distinctive lower outline of a traditional waistcoat.

The rear hem is cut straight across. Combining the pointed front with the square-cut back gives the garment different profiles at the front and rear while retaining its relatively short overall proportions.

Denim-Reinforced Armholes and Turned Hems
Denim fabric is sewn to the inside of the armhole edges to reinforce the openings. This additional fabric supports the edges around the arms and forms a defined finish at the boundary between the outer body and the interior.

The hem edges are turned inward and stitched in place. The stitching secures the folded fabric along the lower outline of the vest, following the pointed front shape and the straight rear hem.

Four-Pocket Layout
The vest has four pockets in total: one on the wearer's left chest, one on each side of the lower front, and one inside the wearer's right front panel.

The three exterior pockets are accessed through double-welt openings set into the body fabric. The interior pocket opens at the top and provides a separate storage area on the inside of the vest.

Left Chest Pocket with an Interior Wabash Fabric Panel
The left chest pocket is formed by sewing a matching Wabash fabric panel to the reverse of the front body. The storage space lies between this interior panel and the front body fabric, with access provided through the narrow opening on the outside.

Stitching around the perimeter of the interior panel secures it to the body and remains visible on the exterior. Its rounded lower corners outline the shape of the storage area, allowing the construction of the pocket to be read through the stitchwork on the front of the vest.

Fine Double-Welt Chest Opening with Bar-Tack Reinforcement
The chest pocket opening is finished with a narrow fabric welt along both the upper and lower edges of the slit in the front body. These two welts cover and reinforce the edges of the opening while keeping its visible profile slim.

Bar-tack stitching reinforces both ends, where inserting or removing items places concentrated stress on the pocket mouth. The opening and the interior storage panel are set at a gentle angle, rising from the center-front side toward the side of the vest.

Watch-Pocket Styling and a Separate Chain Hole
The chest pocket opening is smaller than those of the two lower front pockets, giving it the appearance of a traditional pocket watch pocket. Near this opening, an additional hole is positioned diagonally on the wearer's left front facing between the first and second fastening buttonholes.

This opening is intended for securing a pocket watch chain. Its edges are finished with buttonhole-style stitching, and it is separate from the horizontal buttonholes used to close the vest. The arrangement places the chain attachment close to the chest pocket and retains a functional detail associated with classic work vests.

Lower Front Double-Welt Pockets with Sewn-In Interior Panels
The two lower front pockets use the same basic construction as the chest pocket. A matching Wabash fabric panel is sewn to the inside of each front body section, and the space between that panel and the body fabric forms the pocket compartment.

Their openings are wider than the chest pocket opening and rise gently from the center-front side toward the sides of the vest. Narrow upper and lower welts finish each opening, with bar tacks at both ends reinforcing the areas exposed to repeated handling.

The perimeter stitching that holds each interior panel in place is also visible on the outside. It traces the storage area and its rounded lower corners, making the pocket construction part of the vest's exterior appearance.

Selvedge Details Inside the Exterior Pocket Openings
The inside edges of the exterior pocket openings incorporate selvedge, the woven edge of the fabric. These fabric-edge details are placed inside the pocket mouths, where they are less immediately visible during normal wear.

Their placement carries the fabric's workwear character into the small interior details of the pockets.

Open-Top Interior Pocket on the Right Side
An interior pocket is positioned inside the wearer's right front panel, with its opening at the top. The stitching that secures this pocket passes through to the exterior and forms a visible L-shaped line on the front of the vest.

This relationship between the interior pocket and the exterior stitchwork reflects the practical construction of traditional workwear, with the working seams contributing directly to the garment's appearance.

Two-Panel Denim Back with a Center Seam
The back is assembled from two denim panels joined along the center back. The vertical seam marks the junction between the left and right panels and creates a clear construction line through the otherwise solid denim back.

Rear Denim Cinch Strap with a Metal Buckle
A rear cinch strap is positioned at the waist. Its left and right sections are made from the same denim used for the back body and connect through a metal buckle near the center back.

Tightening the strap draws in the waist at the back, bringing the vest closer to the body and creating a more shaped silhouette through the lower torso. Stitching along the strap edges and at the attachment points secures the components and makes the waist adjustment a visible part of the back design.

Please take care when wearing the vest or sitting down. Contact between the metal buckle and surfaces such as car seats, sofas, chairs, or painted furniture may cause scuffs or scratches.

Locomotive Brand Patch and Size Tag
A fabric patch bearing the "SUGAR CANE & Co." name and a steam locomotive design is sewn directly to the inside of the back neck area. A separate size tag is positioned beneath the patch.

The stitching used to attach the patch is also visible on the upper outside back. It forms a rectangular outline that crosses the center seam, making the position of the interior label apparent through the exterior stitchwork.

Boot-Motif Logo Prints on the Reverse of the Wabash Fabric
The reverse of the front Wabash fabric features spaced "SUGAR CANE" logo prints built around a boot motif. The artwork incorporates the wording "HIGHEST QUALITY" and "TRADE MARK," giving the printed design a classic workwear label appearance.

Because the vest is unlined, these prints remain visible on the inside of the fabric. They extend the vintage-inspired detailing to areas that are usually concealed while the garment is being worn.

Visible Stitching That Outlines the Construction
Stitching follows the front facings, neckline, armholes, hems, pocket attachment areas, and center back, making the assembly of the vest visible through its seam lines.

The stitches securing the interior pocket panels and back-neck patch are especially distinctive because they also appear on the outside. These lines trace the shapes and attachment points of components inside the garment, giving the exterior an appearance that comes directly from its practical construction.

Made in Japan
Sugar Cane model SC12654 is made in Japan. Its combination of a 9 oz. Wabash stripe front and an 11 oz. denim back brings together two characteristic workwear fabrics, while the fine double-welt pockets, metal tack buttons, pocket watch chain hole, and rear cinch strap preserve the functional character of a traditional work vest.

The one-wash finish, compact silhouette, and unlined construction make these details suitable for everyday layering. The visible construction stitching, interior fabric prints, and reinforced openings carry the same attention to material and assembly from the outside of the vest to its less visible interior areas.
