Buzz Rickson's Men's U.S. Navy A-2 Deck Jacket Reproduction, 100% Cotton Back-Satin Shell with Synthetic Pile Lining, TALON Zipper and Concealed Wool Cuffs, Made in Japan (BR16016, 01 Olive Drab)

Buzz Rickson's

This men's Type A-2 deck jacket is made in Japan by Buzz Rickson's, Toyo Enterprises' military label specializing in reproductions and interpretations of vintage American military clothing. Based on an early version of the U.S. Navy utility jacket developed as the successor to the N-1 deck jacket, this model combines an Olive Drab 100% cotton back-satin shell with a substantial polyester-and-acrylic pile lining through the body and sleeves. Its construction includes a TALON-marked metal zipper with a removable cowhide pull extension, a five-button storm flap, a matching fabric collar, a chest pocket with a pointed snap-fastened flap, slanted handwarmer pockets, concealed wool rib-knit cuffs, and adjustable straps at both sides of the hem. The regular fit and relatively straight body preserve the practical proportions of the early naval design, while the thickness of the shell and lining gives the jacket its characteristic cold-weather volume. These materials and functional details bring the character of a military deck jacket into everyday casual wear.

Size and Fit Guide:

Gender: Men.

Fit: In terms of how it feels when worn, this jacket falls on the slightly slimmer side of a regular fit, without being overly tight or having the roominess of a relaxed fit. The shoulders are not cut especially wide, and the thick pile lining occupies some of the space inside the garment, contributing to its slightly trim feel.

In terms of its appearance when worn, the firm, substantial cotton back-satin shell and thick pile lining give the jacket the moderate fullness characteristic of an A-2 deck jacket. With continued wear, the fabric gradually becomes more supple and settles into a more naturally broken-in feel.

The set-in sleeves establish a defined shoulder line, while the body falls relatively straight toward the hem without pronounced shaping at the waist. The side adjusters allow the hem opening to be drawn in as needed. Together with the thickness of the lining, these features give the jacket a substantial appearance without an oversized cut.

The listed measurements are exterior measurements taken from the outside of the jacket. Because the pile lining takes up space inside, this jacket may provide less usable room than a thinner jacket with the same listed chest width. Please consider this difference when comparing measurements and choosing your size.

The numbers on the reproduction neck label should not be treated as a direct equivalent of contemporary sizing. Taking the jacket's fit and the thickness of its pile lining into account, our approximate comparisons with general US/EU sizing are listed below.

Approximate Size Guide

Tagged Size S (reproduction neck label: 34-36): Approximately US/EU XS-S.

Tagged Size M (reproduction neck label: 38-40): Approximately US/EU S-M.

Tagged Size L (reproduction neck label: 42-44): Approximately US/EU M-L.

Tagged Size XL (reproduction neck label: 46-48): Approximately US/EU L-XL.

Tagged Size XXL (reproduction neck label: 50-52): Approximately US/EU XL-XXL.

These comparisons are intended only as a general guide, as sizing varies among brands and garments. Actual fit will depend on your body type, the thickness of the layers worn underneath, and your preferred amount of room. Depending on your build and intended layering, you may wish to consider one size larger than you usually choose.

To help select your size, please measure a similar lined jacket that fits you well, ideally one with comparable thickness and construction, and compare its chest width, body length, center-back sleeve length, sleeve length from the shoulder seam, and shoulder width with the measurements below.

Our model wears Tagged Size M. He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. For reference, he normally wears a US/EU size S/36.

The following measurements show the garment itself laid flat, not the wearer's body measurements. Width is the straight-across measurement of the jacket and does not represent the garment's full chest circumference or the wearer's chest measurement.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Measured with the jacket laid flat, straight across from side to side approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms. This is a flat width measurement, not the garment's full chest circumference or the wearer's chest measurement.

Length (Body Length): Measured down the back from the base of the collar, at the seam where the collar joins the body, to the bottom edge of the hem. The height of the collar is not included.

Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the outer shell cuff. The measurement ends at the edge of the back-satin sleeve opening.

Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The measurement in parentheses is taken from the shoulder seam down to the end of the outer shell cuff. As with the center-back sleeve measurement, the endpoint is the edge of the back-satin sleeve opening.

Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.

U.S. Navy A-2 Deck Jacket Background
The A-2 deck jacket was adopted in the early 1960s as the successor to the U.S. Navy's N-1 jacket for work on deck. Olive Drab was used as the regulation color, and the design remained in service for approximately three decades while undergoing changes to its materials and construction.

The earliest A-2 jackets replaced the N-1's cotton grosgrain shell and alpaca-and-wool lining with a back-satin shell and synthetic pile lining. These material changes are understood to have reflected a reassessment of production efficiency and manufacturing costs.

The A-2 retained several fundamental cold-weather details from the N-1, including a front zipper covered by a button-fastened storm flap and rib-knit cuffs concealed inside the sleeves. At the same time, it introduced a turn-down collar made from the shell fabric, a chest pocket, and hem adjusters. These changes established the A-2 as a naval utility jacket that carried forward the earlier garment's protective construction while revising its materials and functional details.

Early Back-Satin Configuration with a Pointed Chest-Pocket Flap
The shell fabric and chest-pocket flap changed during the A-2's production history. The earliest jackets made under the 1962 contract used back satin, while jungle cloth was used for the second version under the 1964 contract. Both early configurations featured a chest-pocket flap with a pointed center along its lower edge.

Subsequent versions changed to a flap with a straight horizontal lower edge and returned to a back-satin shell. From the 1970s onward, cotton-and-nylon blends also came into use, offering a combination of lightness, strength, and relatively quick drying when wet. Construction was revised over time to simplify manufacturing, including changes to the reinforcement around the sleeve openings.

This reproduction follows the early configuration with a 100% cotton back-satin shell and a pointed chest-pocket flap. Its polyester-and-acrylic pile lining, covered zipper front, concealed rib-knit cuffs, and adjustable hem reproduce the practical arrangement associated with the early A-2 deck jacket.

100% Cotton Back-Satin Shell
The outer shell is made from densely woven 100% cotton back satin. The fabric combines durability with moderate firmness and body, while retaining enough suppleness to bend and move naturally. This balance helps the shell hold its shape without making the garment completely rigid.

Subtle yarn irregularities form horizontal streaks across the surface, adding texture alongside the fine woven structure. Small ripples of seam puckering are also visible around areas such as the shoulders, armholes, and side seams. The horizontal variation within the cloth and the localized undulations along the stitching give the Olive Drab shell its rugged military character.

Substantial Polyester-and-Acrylic Pile Lining
The body and sleeves are lined with a thick synthetic pile fabric made from 70% polyester and 30% acrylic. The pile gathers into small tufts, creating an uneven, textured surface with noticeable depth. Air held between the fibers forms an insulating layer that helps reduce heat loss from inside the jacket.

The thickness of the lining also affects the jacket's shape and fit. Combined with the firm back-satin shell, it creates soft fullness through the body and sleeves and gives the exterior the substantial appearance of a cold-weather jacket. This same thickness occupies part of the space inside the garment, which is why the exterior measurements should be considered together with the lining when choosing a size.

Back-Satin Front Facings and Turned Hem
The inside edges of the front opening are finished with facings made from the same back satin as the shell. These fabric sections form the interior borders of the opening and provide a defined finish beside the front closure.

At the bottom of the body, the shell fabric turns inward to finish the hem. The pile lining begins at the body-side edges of the front facings and above the upper edge of the turned hem section, then extends through the body and sleeves. This arrangement places woven shell fabric around the opening and lower edge while retaining the thickness of the pile across the main interior areas.

Bound Openings in the Underarm Lining
Openings are incorporated into the pile lining at the underarms, with their edges finished in piping. These openings lead into the space between the outer shell and the lining.

The pile therefore does not form a completely uninterrupted layer across these areas. The openings provide a route for air to pass into the space between the two layers, while the piping gives their edges a neat, defined finish.

TALON-Marked Metal Zipper with a Removable Cowhide Pull Extension
The front opening uses a metal zipper with a pull stamped "TALON." A cowhide leather cord is tied to the pull as an extension, increasing the area available to grasp when operating the zipper.

The extended pull makes the zipper easier to handle while wearing gloves. Because the leather cord is tied in place, it can also be removed by undoing the knot.

Five-Button Storm Flap over the Front Zipper
A storm flap extends from the front edge of the wearer's left body panel and covers the zipper. Five horizontal buttonholes are arranged vertically along the flap, with five corresponding four-hole buttons positioned beside the zipper on the wearer's right panel.

After the zipper is closed, the flap folds over it and fastens with the buttons, forming a two-stage closure. The overlapping fabric shields the zipper teeth from direct exposure to wind and helps reduce cold air entering through the front opening.

Matching Back-Satin Turn-Down Collar
The collar is made from the same cotton back satin as the shell and has the pointed ends of a shirt-style turn-down collar. Its woven surface continues the texture and Olive Drab color of the body.

This collar is one of the visible changes from the N-1 design, which used a pile-covered upper collar with more rounded ends. The A-2's matching fabric collar gives the neckline the simpler appearance associated with a utility jacket.

Left Chest Patch Pocket with a Pointed Snap-Fastened Flap
A patch pocket is sewn onto the outside of the wearer's left chest, with a separate flap attached above its opening. The lower corners of the pocket body are cut at an angle, while the lower edge of the flap extends to a point at the center.

The flap covers the pocket entrance and secures with a metal snap, helping keep the contents from slipping out unintentionally. The pocket opening itself is turned inward and secured with stitching to finish the edge.

The single chest pocket creates an asymmetrical arrangement across the front. Its pointed flap is a defining detail of the early A-2 configuration reproduced by this jacket.

Slanted Single-Welt Handwarmer Pockets
Handwarmer pockets are positioned at both sides of the lower front, with slanted openings that allow the hands to enter naturally. Each opening is finished with a single welt made from the shell fabric, while the pocket bag is housed inside the body.

This construction leaves a narrow opening and welt visible on the exterior, keeping the lower front relatively flat. Reinforcement stitching is applied at the upper and lower ends of each opening to support the points that receive stress when the pockets are used.

Set-In Sleeves with One-Piece Shell Panels
The sleeves use a set-in construction, with each sleeve cap sewn into the corresponding armhole of the body. This creates a defined seam around the armhole and a natural transition from the shoulder into the sleeve.

Each main sleeve shell is formed from a single fabric panel. The panel's edges are joined along the underside of the arm to create the sleeve tube. A separate piece of matching back satin is sewn around the sleeve end to finish the outer cuff area.

Concealed 100% Wool Rib-Knit Cuffs
The sleeve openings have no buttons or other adjustable fasteners. Instead, 100% wool rib-knit cuffs are housed inside the sleeve ends, beneath the outer back-satin fabric.

The woven outer cuffs cover the knit sections and help protect them from abrasion and snagging during use. Inside, the elasticity of the rib knit allows the cuffs to wrap around the wrists and reduce gaps at the sleeve openings.

This arrangement helps limit cold air entering through the sleeves and warm air escaping from inside the jacket. It also preserves the plain woven appearance of the sleeve ends while placing the flexible knit cuffs where they can follow the wrists.

Uninterrupted Back Panel and Relatively Straight Body
The back shell has no center-back joining seam, separate back yoke, or action pleats. Its broad, uninterrupted fabric surface allows the woven texture and natural undulations of the back satin to remain visible.

The body is not strongly drawn in at the waist and falls relatively straight toward the hem. This straightforward construction preserves the practical shape of a naval work jacket, while the underlying pile lining adds moderate outward fullness.

Turned Hem with Buckle-Adjustable Side Straps
The lower edge is finished by turning the shell fabric inward and securing it with horizontal stitching. At each side of the hem, an adjuster is formed from two lengths of woven tape connected by a metal buckle.

The two tape sections are positioned on opposite sides of the side seam, with their fixed ends sewn to the body. Changing the length of tape passing through the buckle allows the hem to be adjusted independently on each side.

Drawing in the adjusters reduces the opening around the lower body and helps limit gaps between the jacket and the wearer. It also controls how far the hem spreads outward during movement.

Reproduction U.S. Navy Neck Label and Fabric Hanging Loop
A reproduction label is sewn inside the back neckline. It includes the "U.S. NAVY" name, contract number "DA-36-243-QM(CTM)-11192-C-62," a size marking, and the wording "JACKET, INTERMEDIATE COLD WEATHER (A2)."

The lettering and layout reproduce the appearance of period government-issued clothing labels. A hanging loop made from the same fabric as the shell is positioned above the label.

Made in Japan
Buzz Rickson's Type DECK A-2 "BUZZ RICKSON MFG. CO." jacket is made in Japan. Its cotton back-satin shell, substantial synthetic pile lining, covered zipper front, concealed wool cuffs, and adjustable hem bring together the materials and practical details associated with an early U.S. Navy A-2 deck jacket.

The pointed chest-pocket flap, plain fabric collar, and relatively straight body preserve the character of the naval utility design. Its rugged appearance comes from the texture of the woven shell, the thickness of the lining, and the construction of the individual components, carrying forward the cold-weather features and functional character of clothing developed for work on deck.

Care and Maintenance for This A-2 Deck Jacket
This jacket combines a 100% cotton back-satin shell, a 70% polyester and 30% acrylic pile lining in the body and sleeves, concealed 100% wool rib-knit cuffs, and a cowhide leather zipper-pull cord. These materials have different care requirements. Exposure to water, heat, or unsuitable cleaning methods may cause shrinkage, distortion, or changes in texture and color, affecting the jacket's overall shape and appearance. Before washing the entire jacket, tumble drying, or arranging dry cleaning, check the manufacturer's care instructions attached to the actual product and follow the specified restrictions.

For localized soiling on the cotton shell, carefully wipe the affected area with a soft cloth lightly dampened with a mild detergent diluted in water. Avoid vigorous rubbing, saturating the fabric, or applying the solution to the leather cord. This method may still cause uneven color or discoloration, so always test a small, inconspicuous area first and proceed with care. Allow the area to dry naturally in a well-ventilated location away from direct heat.

Storage
Use a broad, supportive hanger to help maintain the jacket's shape. Make sure the jacket is completely dry before storing it in a dry, well-ventilated location. Loosely cover it with a clean, dry towel or a breathable garment cover to protect it from dust. Periodically inspect the jacket for mold and the wool rib-knit cuffs for insect damage.

Specialist Cleaning
If professional cleaning becomes necessary, consult a trusted specialist in advance and explain the jacket's combination of a cotton shell, polyester-and-acrylic pile lining, wool rib-knit cuffs, and leather cord. Show the specialist the actual care label before agreeing on a cleaning method. Please be aware that cleaning may affect the jacket's shape, color, pile texture, leather components, or printed interior label.

Do not deliberately soil, distress, or artificially age the jacket, as these treatments may cause damage.

- Even after an order has been placed, an item may occasionally be sold out due to the timing of simultaneous purchases. We sincerely appreciate your understanding.
- All measurements are taken manually with the garment laid flat, using a measuring tape.
- Because individual garments and measuring methods may vary, slight measurement differences may occur.
- The actual color of the product may appear slightly different from the photographs depending on lighting conditions and the settings of your monitor or display.
