Sugar Cane Men's Blue Denim Work Shirt, 9 oz. Cotton Long-Sleeve Button-Up Shirt, Made in Japan (SC27852 421A One Wash)

Sugar Cane

This men's long-sleeve cotton button-up shirt is made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a Toyo Enterprises brand specializing in vintage-inspired American workwear. Based on the practical design of classic American work shirts, it is constructed from 9-ounce denim made from 100% cotton, with rope-dyed indigo warp yarns and undyed weft yarns. Subtle variations in yarn thickness, light surface fuzz, and undyed weft yarns showing through between the indigo-dyed warp yarns give the denim a naturally textured, softly mottled appearance with visual depth. A one-wash finish gives the denim a supple feel and makes it comfortable to wear from the start while helping reduce initial shrinkage. Traditional workwear details include two button-flap chest pockets, triple-needle stitching at key seams, off-white two-hole buttons, contrast stitching, single-button cuffs, and a rounded drop-tail shirttail hem. Sugar Cane's careful attention to fabric, construction, and functional detail gives the shirt the rugged character of vintage American workwear while maintaining practical everyday wearability. Its classic, well-balanced design fits naturally into a contemporary casual wardrobe.

Size and Fit Guide:

Gender: Men.

This item generally fits close to standard U.S./EU sizing. It is cut in a classic work-shirt fit, with moderate room through the chest and shoulders without being excessively slim or loose. The body falls relatively straight from the chest toward the hem, while the rounded shirttail hem provides traditional coverage and allows the shirt to sit naturally whether worn tucked or untucked. The 9-ounce cotton denim has a moderate weight and a supple feel, making the shirt suitable for wearing on its own or open over a T-shirt as a light overshirt or shirt jacket. Its balanced proportions and controlled volume also allow it to be worn comfortably beneath many casual jackets and other outerwear garments.

Because fit may vary depending on body type and personal preference, please use the actual garment measurements below as your primary reference. For the most accurate comparison, we recommend measuring a similar long-sleeve shirt that fits you well. All measurements are taken by hand with a measuring tape, so slight variations may occur from one garment to another and depending on the measuring method.

Our model is wearing a tagged size S (14-14 1/2). He stands 5'9" (175 cm) tall, weighs 127 lbs (58 kg), and has a 36-inch (91 cm) chest. He typically wears a U.S./EU size S (36) in most garments.

The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements.
Please compare them with a similar shirt from your wardrobe to get a better sense of the fit.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3 cm (about 1.2 in.) below the armholes.

Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the back hem.

Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the cuff.

Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam straight down to the end of the cuff.

Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from the outer edge of one shoulder seam to the outer edge of the other.

Overall Product Character:
- This men's long-sleeve button-up work shirt is based on the straightforward, functional construction of classic American work shirts. It combines 9-ounce indigo denim with a full button front, two button-flap chest pockets, long set-in sleeves, single-button cuffs, a reinforced double-layer back yoke, a rounded drop-tail shirttail hem, urea cat's-eye buttons, and triple-needle stitching at major seams. The naturally textured denim, visible contrast stitching, and practical construction give the shirt the rugged character of vintage American workwear, while its balanced classic fit makes it suitable for contemporary casual wear.

Fabric Material:
- The shirt is constructed from 9-ounce denim made from 100% cotton. The warp is formed from rope-dyed indigo yarns, while the weft uses undyed yarns. This traditional combination creates a deep indigo surface with lighter undyed yarns visible between the dyed warp yarns, giving the fabric greater visual depth than a uniformly piece-dyed textile.

- At 9 ounces, the denim has moderate shirt-weight substance without the excessive thickness or rigidity of heavy denim commonly used for jeans or outerwear. It provides enough body to support the collar, front placket, chest pockets, cuffs, and shirttail hem while retaining a supple feel that conforms naturally to the wearer's movement.

Rope-Dyed Indigo Warp Yarns:
- The warp yarns are colored using a rope-dyeing process. In this method, groups of cotton yarns are gathered into rope-like bundles and repeatedly passed through indigo dye baths, with oxidation occurring between successive immersions. This repeated dyeing and oxidation process builds the indigo color gradually on the exterior of the yarns.

- Rope dyeing characteristically leaves the central portion of each yarn less deeply penetrated by the indigo than its outer surface. With continued wear and laundering, abrasion gradually removes color from the outer areas of the warp yarns, allowing lighter tones to appear. This construction supports the natural development of fading, tonal variation, and individualized wear patterns over time.

Undyed Weft Yarns:
- Undyed cotton yarns are used for the weft. These lighter yarns cross beneath and between the indigo-dyed warp yarns and remain clearly visible on the reverse side of the fabric. Portions of the undyed weft also show through between the warp yarns on the face of the denim.

- The visual interaction between the dark indigo warp and lighter undyed weft creates a softly mottled appearance rather than a completely solid or flat blue surface. It also gives the fabric the two-sided color structure associated with traditional indigo denim, with a predominantly blue face and a visibly lighter reverse.

Power-Loom Denim Construction:
- The cotton warp and weft yarns are woven into denim on a power loom. The resulting fabric retains subtle irregularities in yarn thickness and weave density rather than presenting an excessively smooth or mechanically uniform surface. These restrained variations contribute to the straightforward, unrefined textile character associated with vintage-inspired workwear.

- The woven structure provides sufficient dimensional stability for a practical work shirt while allowing the fabric to remain flexible. The material therefore combines the recognizable diagonal texture and rugged appearance of denim with the drape and mobility required for a long-sleeve shirt.

Surface Texture and Fabric Character:
- Subtle natural variations in yarn thickness, light surface fuzz, and undyed weft yarns showing through between the indigo-dyed warp yarns create a textured surface with visual depth. The fabric is not completely flat, polished, or mechanically uniform. Instead, it retains restrained roughness and a slightly irregular appearance that reflect the natural character of the cotton yarns and woven construction.

- The surface texture is visible without making the fabric excessively coarse or stiff. The 9-ounce denim has a supple hand that allows it to follow the body naturally, balancing the rugged appearance of traditional workwear denim with comfortable everyday wearability.

Fabric Weight and Layering:
- The 9-ounce denim is more substantial than lightweight chambray or ordinary fine-yarn shirting, but it is not as heavy or rigid as denim typically used for jeans or heavy outerwear. Its moderate weight allows the shirt to be worn buttoned as a standalone long-sleeve garment or left open over a T-shirt or lightweight knit as an overshirt or light shirt jacket.

- The classic fit provides enough room for light layering without creating excessive volume. At the same time, the controlled proportions allow the shirt to be worn beneath many casual jackets and outerwear garments. This balance makes it useful across a wide range of seasonal and layered casual combinations.

One-Wash Finish:
- The completed garment has been washed once during production, commonly referred to as a one-wash finish. This process relaxes some of the denim's initial stiffness and gives the fabric a more supple hand and natural drape from the beginning of wear. The shirt therefore conforms to the body more readily than a comparable unwashed denim garment.

- Washing the completed garment also allows part of the fabric's initial dimensional change to occur before the shirt is sold, helping reduce major initial shrinkage after purchase. However, the one-wash process does not guarantee complete dimensional stability. Minor additional shrinkage or variation may still occur depending on water temperature, washing method, drying conditions, and repeated laundering.

Indigo Aging and Fabric Development:
- Continued wear and washing will gradually soften the cotton fibers and further relax the denim. The fabric may develop a more fluid drape and become increasingly comfortable as it conforms to the wearer's body and movement.

- The rope-dyed indigo warp yarns will also develop natural tonal variation as surface color is gradually reduced through friction and laundering. Areas exposed to repeated movement, folding, and abrasion, including the collar, placket, pocket edges, cuffs, elbows, seams, and hem, may fade at different rates. These changes are normal characteristics of indigo denim and allow each shirt to acquire an individualized appearance over time.

Fit and Silhouette:
- The shirt has a classic work-shirt fit with moderate room through the chest, shoulders, and body. Its silhouette is neither excessively slim nor intentionally oversized. The body falls relatively straight from the chest toward the hem without severe tapering, creating a balanced shape based on traditional workwear proportions.

- The moderate room through the body allows the shirt to be worn comfortably over a T-shirt or lightweight base layer. At the same time, the overall volume remains controlled enough for the garment to fit beneath many casual jackets without creating unnecessary bulk.

- The body length provides traditional work-shirt coverage, while the curved shirttail construction allows the shirt to sit naturally when worn either tucked or untucked. Because individual body proportions and fit preferences vary, the actual garment measurements should be used as the primary sizing reference.

Collar Construction:
- The neckline is finished with a standard point collar attached to a separate collar stand. The collar narrows naturally toward the points, creating the familiar profile of a traditional button-front work shirt. The separate stand forms a supporting band around the base of the neck, stabilizing the collar and giving the neckline appropriate dimensional definition.

- Unlike a camp collar or open collar designed primarily to remain spread at the neckline, this collar can be fastened completely with the top button. When fully buttoned, it maintains a more orderly and defined shape. When the top button is left open, the collar forms a natural casual opening without spreading excessively.

Full Button-Front Closure:
- The shirt uses a full-length six-button front closure that opens completely to the hem. This configuration allows easy dressing, ventilation, and adjustment for layered wear. The corresponding buttonholes are positioned vertically, perpendicular to the horizontal direction in which the two front edges separate when the shirt is opened.

- The full-opening construction allows the garment to function as a conventional button-up shirt or as a light overshirt worn open over a T-shirt. Its uncomplicated operation reflects the practical construction associated with traditional work clothing.

Asymmetrical Front Placket Construction:
- The two sides of the front opening use different construction methods. On the left front panel, a separate strip of matching denim is folded to create a doubled layer and sewn onto the body as a distinct applied placket. This construction reinforces the buttonhole side and gives the front edge a stable, clearly defined shape.

- On the right front panel, the edge of the body fabric is turned inward to form an integrated facing. This folded construction creates a doubled area around the button attachments without requiring a separate applied placket piece. Together, the two methods reinforce the front opening while preserving the traditional asymmetrical construction found on many classic work shirts.

Upper Button Spacing:
- The distance between the top button and the second button is slightly narrower than the spacing between the remaining buttons below. This arrangement helps control the front opening when only the top button is left unfastened.

- By positioning the second button closer to the neckline, the shirt can be worn casually with the collar open without creating an unnecessarily deep or widely spread opening at the upper chest. This is a small but practical adjustment that contributes to the balanced appearance of the collar and front placket.

Set-In Sleeve Construction:
- The shirt uses conventional long set-in sleeves. Each shaped sleeve cap is sewn into the corresponding armhole, with the sleeve beginning at the outer end of the shoulder seam. This creates a clearly defined shoulder line and a structured shirt profile.

- In contrast to raglan construction, where the sleeve panel extends toward the neckline, the set-in configuration separates the shoulder and sleeve into distinct pattern pieces. This allows the sleeves to fall naturally from the shoulders and supports the traditional appearance of a classic button-up work shirt.

Chest Pocket Construction:
- Two exterior patch pockets are sewn directly onto the front body, with one positioned on each side of the chest. Because they are patch pockets, the complete pocket bodies are applied to the surface of the shirt rather than inserted into openings cut into the front panels.

- Each pocket is covered by a separate button-fastened flap. The flaps help retain small personal items and give the chest area a symmetrical, functional workwear appearance. The lower corners of the pocket bodies are gently rounded rather than sharply squared, softening their outlines while preserving practical storage capacity.

Pen Opening on the Left Chest Pocket:
- The left chest-pocket flap incorporates a horizontal buttonhole-shaped opening designed for carrying a pen or similar narrow writing instrument. This opening allows a pen to be inserted without unfastening and lifting the main pocket flap.

- The pen opening keeps a frequently used writing instrument readily accessible while the primary pocket compartment remains secured by its buttoned flap. This feature is derived from the practical requirements of traditional American work clothing.

Single-Button Cuff Construction:
- Each sleeve is finished with a single-button cuff. The outer end of the cuff has a rounded profile rather than a sharply squared corner, and the cuff buttonhole is positioned horizontally in relation to the sleeve opening.

- Releasing the button increases the circumference of the cuff opening, making it easier to pass the hand through the sleeve when putting on or removing the shirt. The simple one-button arrangement provides uncomplicated adjustment and is consistent with traditional work-shirt construction.

Sleeve Vent Construction:
- A slit is incorporated above each cuff to provide the additional opening required for easy dressing and natural wrist movement. When the cuff button is released, the vent allows the lower sleeve to open more fully, making it easier to pass the hand through the cuff.

Urea Cat's-Eye Buttons:
- Off-white urea cat's-eye buttons are used throughout the shirt, including the center front, chest-pocket flaps, and cuffs. Each button has an elongated recessed groove across its center, producing the characteristic appearance that gives the cat's-eye button its name.

- The two attachment holes are positioned within the recessed central groove. This allows the sewing thread to sit below the highest point of the button face, reducing its exposure to direct friction, abrasion, and snagging. The groove also helps keep the attachment thread in a stable position.

- Urea resin has historically been used to produce buttons with a dense feel and an understated appearance suited to utilitarian garments. The off-white color creates a clear but traditional contrast against the deep indigo denim.

Double-Layer Back Yoke:
- The upper back is divided by a yoke panel extending across both shoulders. The back yoke is constructed from two layers of denim, adding reinforcement to the shoulder and upper-back area, where the garment is repeatedly subjected to tension during dressing, arm movement, and everyday activity.

- In addition to reinforcing the upper back, the doubled construction provides greater stability around the shoulder area. It supports the surrounding seams and helps the upper portion of the shirt maintain a consistent shape through repeated wear and laundering.

Fabric Grain and Panel Arrangement:
- The main body and sleeve panels are cut on the conventional lengthwise grain. On the chest-pocket flaps, back yoke, and cuffs, the fabric is rotated and cut on the cross grain. This changes the direction in which the denim twill lines appear across these components.

- Because the shirt uses solid indigo denim rather than a printed or striped fabric, the directional change remains restrained. However, differences in twill direction and light reflection subtly distinguish the pocket flaps, yoke, and cuffs from the surrounding panels, adding controlled visual variation without the use of contrasting fabric or decorative graphics.

Rounded Drop-Tail Shirttail Hem:
- The lower edge is finished with a traditional rounded shirttail profile. The center portions of the front and back extend lower, while the hem curves gradually upward toward both side seams. The front and back are not cut to the same length. The back hem extends lower than the front, creating a functional drop-tail construction.

- When the shirt is worn untucked, the curved front and back sections follow the body more naturally than a straight, square-cut hem. The longer back provides additional coverage around the waist and seat while maintaining the traditional appearance of a work shirt.

- When the shirt is tucked into trousers, the extended center sections provide additional fabric inside the waistband. The longer back hem is particularly useful in helping reduce the likelihood of the shirt pulling out during ordinary bending, reaching, and upper-body movement.

Triple-Needle Stitching:
- Major seams exposed to repeated movement and pulling, including the shoulder seams, armholes, back-yoke seam, and side seams, are reinforced with triple-needle stitching. This construction produces three parallel rows of stitches rather than the single row commonly used on basic casual shirts.

- The three stitch rows help stabilize the joined fabric layers and distribute stress across a wider area during arm movement, repeated wear, and laundering. This is a true triple-needle construction and should not be confused with double-needle stitching, which produces only two parallel stitch rows.

- In addition to its reinforcing function, the visibly pronounced stitch lines contribute to the rugged appearance of the shirt and emphasize its workwear-oriented construction.

Off-White Contrast Stitching:
- Off-white sewing thread is used throughout the shirt, creating a clear contrast against the deep indigo-blue denim. The contrasting thread makes the construction of the collar, front placket, chest pockets, cuffs, yoke, armholes, side seams, and hem visually apparent.

- The contrast is functional as well as decorative in appearance because it clearly reveals the multiple rows of reinforcement stitching used at major seams. As the indigo denim fades through wear and laundering, the relationship between the fabric color and the off-white stitching will gradually change, further emphasizing the shirt's evolving workwear character.

Styling and Everyday Wearability:
- The moderate-weight denim, functional chest pockets, reinforced seams, and classic work-shirt silhouette allow the garment to be worn in several practical ways. It can be buttoned and worn as a standalone long-sleeve shirt, left open over a T-shirt or lightweight knit as an overshirt or light shirt jacket, or layered beneath an outer jacket in cooler conditions.

- The deep indigo color coordinates naturally with chinos, fatigue pants, khakis, contrasting denim, and other casual garments. Although the shirt incorporates numerous details derived from traditional work clothing, its clean proportions and restrained design prevent it from appearing excessively bulky or costume-like in a contemporary wardrobe.

Overall Construction and Design:
- By combining the practical construction of a classic American work shirt with rope-dyed 9-ounce indigo denim, this garment presents the straightforward, rugged character of vintage workwear in a form suited to modern casual use. The natural yarn variation, lightly textured surface, supple fabric character, reinforced seams, functional pockets, and traditional cat's-eye buttons reflect Sugar Cane's attention to material and construction.

- Off-white sewing thread clearly defines the triple-needle seams and other structural stitching against the deep indigo fabric, adding contrast and visual dimension to the shirt. The result is a versatile garment that combines traditional workwear details, practical everyday comfort, and the distinctive aging potential of rope-dyed indigo denim.

Important Information About Indigo-Dyed Products:

- This product is made with indigo-dyed yarns. Due to the inherent characteristics of indigo dye, the color will gradually change through repeated wear and washing. Natural fading and tonal variation may develop particularly along seams, folds, edges, and other areas exposed to frequent movement or abrasion. These changes are normal characteristics of indigo-dyed fabric and are part of its natural aging process.

- Color may transfer through friction, perspiration, or contact while the fabric is damp from rain or other moisture. Please use particular care when wearing or handling this product with white or light-colored clothing, bags, shoes, belts, furniture, automobile seats, and other surfaces that may absorb transferred dye.

- Wash this garment separately from white, light-colored, or otherwise color-sensitive items. Avoid prolonged soaking. After washing, remove the garment promptly, reshape it as necessary, and line dry it in the shade. Do not leave the garment folded or piled while wet, as this may cause uneven color transfer or staining.

- If detergent is used, choose a mild neutral detergent that does not contain bleach or optical brighteners. Do not use chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach, or detergents containing bleaching agents, as they may cause excessive fading, discoloration, or uneven changes in the indigo color.

- Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or strong artificial light may cause fading or uneven discoloration. When not in use, store the garment in a dry, well-ventilated location away from direct sunlight and strong light sources.
