シルエットは、身頃や袖にゆとりを持たせながら、着丈を比較的短めに設定した、フライトジャケットらしいクラシックなフィットです。肩幅そのものを極端に広く取るのではなく、ゆとりを持たせた身幅、アームホールから上腕部にかけてゆったりと設計された袖まわり、短めの着丈、さらに裾にギャザーを寄せたウエストバンドによる腰まわりの絞りを組み合わせることで、上半身に立体的なボリュームを持たせた、丸みのあるシルエットを形成しています。また、表地と裏地の間には中綿が組み込まれているため、中綿を持たないL-2系のライトゾーン用フライトジャケットと比較すると、身頃や袖に厚みがあり、より立体感のあるボリュームが生まれます。一方で、この中綿の厚みが内側の着用スペースをある程度占めるため、外観にはゆとりとボリュームがありながらも、実際の着用感は過度にルーズなものではありません。実際のフィット感は、着用するインナーの厚さや体型、好みの着用感によって異なります。サイズをお選びになる際は、下記の実寸を、お手持ちの同種のフライトジャケットの実寸と比較してご検討ください。

東洋エンタープライズが展開するミリタリーレーベル、Buzz Rickson's(バズリクソンズ)のType WEPフライトジャケットです。

本製品は、MIL-S-18342C規格のWEP(1972年モデル)を再現した復刻モデルです。WEPは、米海軍で1950年代中期から1970年代中期頃まで採用された冬季用フライングスーツで、ジャケットと対応するトラウザーズを組み合わせて着用する上下式装備として設計されました。そのため、ジャケットのライニングには、トラウザーズと連結するためのタブが設けられています。WEPは仕様の改訂を重ねながら展開され、その最終仕様がMIL-S-18342Cで、一般に「Cタイプ」と呼ばれています。本製品では、この後期型WEPを特徴づける構成やディテールを再現しています。

表地には、ナイロン100%の平織り生地を使用しています。経糸と緯糸を交互に組み合わせた平織りによって、表面には細かく緻密な織り目が形成されています。硬さや張りの強いナイロン生地ではなく、柔らかくしなやかな質感を持ち、身体の動きにも自然になじむ生地感です。表面は比較的滑らかで、強い光沢を持つ生地ではありませんが、光の当たる方向や見る角度によってマットな光沢と陰影が現れます。また、生地本来の細かなシワに加え、縫製部分には軽いパッカリングが生じることで、ミリタリーウェアらしい自然な表情が生まれています。初期型WEPには比較的淡いリーフグリーンが用いられていましたが、後期のCタイプでは、より緑みの強いオリーブグリーンへと変化しており、この色調も後期型WEPを印象づける特徴のひとつとなっています。

裏地には、綿100%のコットンキャンバスを使用しています。身頃から袖までを覆う総裏仕様で、コットンキャンバスでありながら、比較的柔らかで滑らかな表面を持ち、インナーとの摩擦を抑えることで、着脱時や腕を動かした際の引っ掛かりを軽減する構造となっています。

表地と裏地の間には、保温用の中間層としてナイロン70%・ポリエステル30%のパイル中綿を使用しています。パイル状に形成された繊維が内部に空気を蓄えることで保温層を作り、衣服内部の暖かさを保つ構造です。また、中綿を内包することで身頃や袖に適度な厚みと立体的なボリュームが生まれ、WEP特有の丸みを帯びたフライトジャケットらしいシルエットを形成しています。

袖はセットインスリーブ仕様です。身頃に設けられたアームホールへ袖を縫い合わせる構造で、中綿を含んだ袖は肩から腕にかけて立体的なボリュームを持たせ、ニット製の袖口に向かって徐々に絞られています。

フロント開閉部には、真鍮製金具を使用したジッパーを採用しています。スライダーには「SCOVILL」の刻印が入り、引き手には馬革製のレザータブが取り付けられています。金属製の引き手よりもつかみやすい面積を確保することで、グローブを着用した状態でも開閉操作を行いやすい構造となっています。

フロントジッパーの内側には、開口部に沿って縦方向へウインドフラップを配置しています。ジッパーのエレメント間から入り込む風を内側で遮り、衣服内部への冷気の侵入を抑えるための構造です。また、ウインドフラップには長手方向へ複数列の平行したステッチが施されており、重ねられた生地を安定させながら、フラップの形状を保つ役割を持たせています。

襟にはウール100%のリブニットカラーを使用しています。柔軟性を持つニット素材のため、襟を折り返して着用するほか、首まわりに沿わせるように立てることもできます。左襟にはストラップが取り付けられています。このストラップは一端が襟に縫い付けられ、もう一端にはボタンホールが設けられています。右襟には、このストラップを固定するためのボタンが取り付けられています。襟を立て、ストラップを右襟のボタンに留めることで、襟をスタンドカラーの状態で固定でき、その結果、首元の防風性を高めることができます。また、ストラップを使用しない場合には、左襟側の保持用ボタンに留めて収めておくことができます。

袖口にもウール100%のリブニットを使用しています。一般的なリブニットカフスとは異なり、リブの一部が先細りになりながら袖の上方へ延び、ナイロン製の袖本体との接合部が長いV字形を描く特徴的な構造です。この構造は、中綿が入る袖口付近のかさばりを抑えながら、手首まわりのフィット感を高めるためのものとされています。中綿入りの袖をそのまま手首まで延ばすのではなく、袖端の一部を柔軟なリブニットに置き換えることで、ボリュームのある袖から手首へ向かって自然に絞られる構成となっています。このV字形のリブニットカフスは、後期C仕様のWEPを特徴づけるディテールのひとつです。

背面の左右、後ろ側のアームホール付近には、肩まわりの可動域を確保するためのアクションプリーツ(バイ・スイングバック)を備えています。通常時には折り込みの内側に余分な生地が収められていますが、腕を前方へ動かすとプリーツが開き、背面の肩まわりにゆとりが生まれます。これにより、比較的短めの着丈でありながら、肩や腕を前へ伸ばす動きにも追従しやすい構造となっています。

裾には、襟や袖口に見られるニットリブではなく、表地と同系統の生地で覆われたゴム入りのウエストバンドを使用しています。ウエストバンドには水平方向へ複数列のステッチが施され、ギャザーを形成することで、比較的ゆとりのある身頃を腰まわりで適度に引き締めています。これにより裾の開きを抑えながら、身頃下部のボリュームを整える構造となっています。この構造により、WEP特有の丸みを帯びたフライトジャケットシルエットを形成しています。

左右の前身頃には、フラップ付きのパッチポケットを配置しています。各フラップは、下辺の左右が中央に向かって斜めに下がり、中央に下向きの頂点を作る形状で、外側から見えない隠しスナップボタンによって留めることができます。ポケット口の上端は、フラップの開閉に合わせて内側へ折り込まれる構造となっています。また、ポケット本体の下部から外側にかけてマチが設けられており、収納物に応じて立体的に広がる構造です。左側のフロントポケットには、フロントジッパー寄りの内側部分に、ペンを差し込むためのボタンホール状の開口部が設けられています。

左上腕部には、縦長のユーティリティポケットを配置しています。ポケット上部には長方形のフラップを備え、外側から見えない隠しスナップボタンによって開閉できる仕様です。フラップ裏側は生地端を綺麗に始末せず、切りっぱなしの状態を残した仕上げとなっており、当時のミリタリーウェアらしい簡素で実用本位な構造を再現しています。

身頃内側の下部には、対応するトラウザーズと連結するための4本の織りテープ製タブが配置されています。それぞれのタブにはボタンホールが設けられており、下衣側の留め具と接続できる構造です。また、ウインドフラップの下部にも、短い織りテープを折り返したループが取り付けられています。 これらの連結タブは、本来ジャケットとトラウザーズを組み合わせる冬季用フライングスーツの上衣として設計されたことを伝える特徴的なディテールです。(このアイテムはジャケット単独での製品です。対応するパンツは付属しておりません)

首裏には、当時の軍用衣料に見られる形式を意識した復刻ラベルが縫い付けられています。ラベルには「JACKET - SUITS, FLYING, WINTER」「MIL-S-18342 C (WEP)」「8415-286-7970」「BUZZ RICKSON MFG. This men's Type WEP flight jacket is made in Japan by Buzz Rickson's, Toyo Enterprises' military label specializing in reproductions and interpretations of vintage American military clothing. The jacket reproduces the later U.S. Navy WEP winter flying-suit configuration made to the MIL-S-18342C specification, commonly referred to as the C-Type and associated with the 1972 model. Its construction combines an Olive plain-weave nylon shell, a full cotton-canvas lining, a nylon-and-polyester pile interlining, a wool rib-knit collar and cuffs, distinctive V-shaped cuff-to-sleeve junctions, an action back for increased shoulder mobility, a SCOVILL-marked brass zipper with a horsehide pull tab, an internal wind flap, large flap-covered front patch pockets, a left upper-sleeve utility pocket, and a gathered fabric-covered waistband. Four internal attachment tabs reflect the jacket's original role as the upper component of a two-piece winter flying suit designed to connect with matching trousers. The pile interlining adds insulation, thickness, and volume through the body and sleeves, while the gathered waist and tapered knit cuffs help create the rounded silhouette characteristic of the later WEP design.

The jacket has a classic flight-jacket fit, with generous room through the body and sleeves combined with a comparatively short body length. Rather than using an excessively broad shoulder width, it creates volume through its roomy chest, full armholes and upper sleeves, compact length, and gathered waistband, which draws the hem inward around the waist. Together, these elements give the upper body a rounded, three-dimensional silhouette characteristic of traditional flight jackets.

The jacket has an insulating layer between the shell and lining, giving the body and sleeves noticeably more thickness and structure than lightweight-zone flight jackets such as L-2 styles, which do not use comparable insulation. At the same time, the insulation occupies some of the internal wearing space, so although the jacket appears full and voluminous from the outside, the actual fit is not excessively loose.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.

Type WEP MIL-S-18342C U.S. Navy Winter Flying Suit Jacket
This Type WEP flight jacket is produced by Buzz Rickson's, Toyo Enterprises' military label specializing in detailed reproductions and interpretations of historic American military garments. This model reproduces the later WEP configuration associated with the MIL-S-18342C specification and the 1972 model.

The WEP was developed as the jacket component of a two-piece U.S. Navy winter flying suit used in conjunction with corresponding trousers. Unlike a conventional stand-alone jacket, the original system was conceived so that the upper and lower garments could be physically connected. This relationship is preserved on the reproduction through attachment tabs installed inside the lower body of the jacket.

The WEP evolved through successive specification revisions, with MIL-S-18342C representing the final C-Type configuration. BR15947 incorporates a number of details associated with this later form, including its olive-colored nylon shell, insulated construction, distinctive V-shaped knit cuff junctions, bi-swing action back, fabric-covered elasticized waistband, large front pockets, upper-sleeve utility pocket, and internal trouser-attachment system.

100% Nylon Plain-Weave Outer Shell
The outer shell is made from 100% nylon woven in a plain-weave construction. In plain weave, the lengthwise warp yarns and crosswise weft yarns pass alternately over and under one another, creating a compact and evenly interlaced textile structure without the diagonal ribs of a twill weave or the reinforcement grid of ripstop fabric.

The resulting surface is fine, dense, and relatively smooth. Rather than having the hard, board-like hand sometimes associated with more rigid nylon fabrics, this shell has a softer and more pliable character that allows it to flex naturally with the movement of the garment.

The nylon does not have a bright or highly reflective finish. Instead, the surface shows a subdued, matte luster that changes subtly according to the direction of the light and viewing angle. Fine natural wrinkles in the fabric, together with light puckering around stitched areas, add dimensional variation to the otherwise smooth woven surface.

Earlier WEP configurations are associated with a comparatively lighter Leaf Green appearance, while the later C-Type is characterized by a stronger olive-green tone. This deeper olive coloration is one of the visual elements that distinguishes the later WEP configuration reproduced by this jacket.

Full 100% Cotton Canvas Lining
The interior is fully lined from the body through the sleeves with 100% cotton canvas. Although described as canvas, the lining has a comparatively soft and smooth surface rather than the exceptionally stiff or coarse hand associated with very heavy utility canvas.

The lining forms a continuous textile layer between the wearer's clothing and the enclosed insulating material. Its relatively smooth surface helps reduce friction against shirts, sweaters, and other layers worn underneath, allowing the jacket to slide more easily over the body during dressing and removal and reducing resistance when the arms move inside the sleeves.

In addition to providing the finished interior surface of the jacket, the cotton lining also serves as the mounting surface for internal components such as the identification label and trouser-attachment tabs.

70% Nylon / 30% Polyester Pile Insulation
Between the nylon outer shell and cotton lining is an insulating pile layer composed of 70% nylon and 30% polyester. The pile construction creates numerous small air spaces within the thickness of the material. These trapped pockets of air form an insulating layer that helps reduce the loss of body heat through the garment.

Unlike a thin shell jacket in which the outer fabric and lining lie relatively close together, the pile insulation adds measurable thickness between the two layers. This produces additional loft and structural volume through both the torso and sleeves.

The insulation therefore affects not only thermal performance but also the physical shape of the jacket. It gives the body and sleeves a fuller, more dimensional form and contributes directly to the rounded, substantial silhouette associated with the WEP flight-jacket design.

Long Set-In Sleeve Construction
The jacket uses conventional set-in sleeves. Each shaped sleeve is sewn into a defined armhole in the body, establishing a clear structural division between the shoulder section and sleeve rather than extending diagonally toward the neckline as in raglan construction.

Because the sleeves contain the same insulated layered construction as the body, they retain three-dimensional volume from the shoulder through the upper arm and forearm. The sleeve gradually narrows toward the rib-knit cuff, allowing the fuller insulated upper section to transition into a more closely fitted wrist opening.

SCOVILL-Marked Brass Front Zipper with Horsehide Pull Tab
The front opening is secured by a metal zipper using brass hardware. The zipper slider carries the "SCOVILL" marking, reproducing the utilitarian metal-fastener character associated with military flight garments.

A horsehide leather extension tab is attached to the metal zipper pull. By increasing the amount of material available to grasp, the leather tab provides a larger and more tactile operating surface than the metal pull alone. This makes the zipper easier to locate and manipulate, particularly when dexterity is reduced by gloves or cold-weather clothing.

The horsehide tab also separates the user's fingers from direct contact with the relatively small metal pull while preserving the straightforward mechanical construction of the front closure.

Full-Length Interior Wind Flap
A separate wind flap is positioned vertically behind the front zipper and extends along the opening. This additional layer sits directly behind the zipper elements, where small gaps would otherwise provide a relatively direct path for outside air to enter the interior of the jacket.

By placing another textile barrier behind the zipper, the construction helps reduce direct airflow through the center-front opening and limits cold air penetration into the garment. The flap also separates the metal zipper assembly from clothing worn underneath.

Multiple parallel rows of longitudinal stitching run along the wind flap. These stitch lines stabilize the layered construction, control shifting between the joined materials, and help the flap retain its narrow, elongated shape along the zipper opening.

100% Wool Rib-Knit Collar with Buttoned Throat Strap
The collar is made from 100% wool rib knit. Compared with the woven nylon body panels, the knitted structure provides greater flexibility and elasticity, allowing the collar to be worn folded down or raised around the neck.

A separate throat strap is attached to the left side of the collar. One end of the strap is permanently sewn to the collar, while a worked buttonhole is formed at the opposite end. A corresponding button is positioned on the right collar.

When the collar is raised, the strap can be extended across the front of the neck and secured to the button on the opposite side. This holds the collar in a stand-collar position and closes the open area around the throat more effectively, thereby increasing protection against direct airflow at the neckline.

When the throat strap is not being used, it can be secured to a retaining button on the left collar. This keeps the loose strap controlled against the collar instead of allowing it to hang freely.

100% Wool V-Shaped Rib-Knit Cuffs
The sleeve cuffs are also made from 100% wool rib knit. Unlike a conventional rib-knit cuff attached to the sleeve as a relatively straight band around the wrist, this construction incorporates a tapered extension of knit that projects upward into the lower sleeve.

As the knit section narrows toward the upper sleeve, its junction with the surrounding nylon shell forms a long V-shaped outline. The V therefore occurs at the interface between the woven sleeve and knitted cuff rather than as an open slit at the wrist edge.

This arrangement is intended to reduce excessive bulk where the insulated sleeve transitions into the wrist. Instead of carrying the full thickness of the padded woven sleeve directly to the cuff opening, part of the lower sleeve area is replaced by more flexible knitted material.

The construction allows the full, insulated sleeve to taper more naturally toward the wrist while the rib knit conforms more closely around the wearer's arm. This distinctive V-shaped cuff treatment is one of the recognizable construction details associated with the later C-Type WEP configuration.

Bi-Swing Action Back for Shoulder Mobility
Action pleats, also known as a bi-swing back, are incorporated at both sides of the rear body near the back armholes. The construction places additional fabric inside folded sections that remain relatively flat when the arms are in a neutral position.

When the wearer reaches forward, the folds can open and release this concealed fabric, temporarily increasing the effective width across the upper back and rear shoulder area. When less extension is required, the additional material returns into the folded structure.

This allows the jacket to maintain a comparatively compact body length while still providing additional room for forward arm movement. The system is particularly useful in a flight-jacket design, where freedom of movement through the shoulders and upper back must coexist with a short, controlled body silhouette.

Fabric-Covered Elasticized Gathered Waistband
The lower edge of the jacket does not use the exposed rib-knit waistband commonly seen on designs such as the MA-1. Instead, the WEP uses an elasticized waistband covered with fabric matching the general character of the outer shell.

Multiple horizontal rows of stitching run through the waistband, visually dividing it into narrow channels while stabilizing the gathered construction. The elasticized structure draws the comparatively roomy lower body inward around the waist.

This reduces the open circumference at the hem, controls excess volume through the lower torso, and helps keep the jacket closer to the body around the waist. Gusseted Front Patch Pockets with Concealed Snap Closures
Large patch pockets are positioned on both front body panels. Each pocket is covered by a broad flap whose lower edges angle downward from both sides and meet at a central downward-facing point.

The flaps are secured by concealed snap fasteners. Because the snaps are hidden beneath the flaps, the exterior surfaces remain visually clean while the pockets can still be positively closed.

The upper edge of each pocket body is constructed so that it folds inward as the flap is opened and closed. This allows the pocket opening to move with the flap rather than remaining as a completely rigid horizontal edge.

Additional fabric is incorporated along the lower and outer portions of the pocket body to form gussets. These gusseted sections allow the pocket to expand outward when contents are inserted, giving it greater usable internal volume than a completely flat patch pocket while allowing it to lie closer to the jacket when lightly loaded.

On the wearer's left front pocket, a small buttonhole-shaped opening is positioned near the inner edge toward the front zipper. This opening is intended to accept a pen, providing a narrow dedicated access point separate from the primary pocket opening.

Left Upper-Sleeve Utility Pocket with Raw-Cut Flap Interior
A vertically oriented utility pocket is sewn onto the outside of the left upper sleeve. The pocket is covered by a rectangular flap and secured by a concealed snap fastener positioned beneath the flap.

This placement provides an additional storage compartment on the upper arm without interrupting the large front body pockets. The concealed fastening maintains the simple exterior profile of the flap while keeping the pocket opening secured.

Four Interior Trouser-Attachment Tabs
Four short woven tape tabs are installed around the lower interior of the jacket. Each tab incorporates a worked buttonhole so that it can engage with the corresponding fastening points on the matching trousers.

These tabs are a direct reminder that the WEP was originally conceived as the upper half of a two-piece winter flying suit rather than solely as an independent outer jacket. Connecting the upper and lower garments helps maintain their relationship during movement and prevents the jacket and trousers from separating as freely as completely independent pieces.

A separate short woven tape loop is also positioned at the lower end of the internal wind flap. This component is distinct from the four buttonhole-equipped trouser-attachment tabs.

Reproduction Military-Style Identification Label and Hanger Loop
A reproduction identification label is sewn inside the back neck area. Its layout and typography follow the general format associated with period military garment labels and reproduce a series of specification, identification, and procurement-style markings.

The visible wording includes "JACKET - SUITS, FLYING, WINTER," "MIL-S-18342 C (WEP)," "8415-286-7970," "BUZZ RICKSON MFG. CO., INC.," and "DSA 100-72-C-1243."

These markings reproduce the visual language of military garment identification, including the item designation, specification reference, stock-number-style identifier, manufacturer-style name, and contract-style number. The label therefore functions not merely as modern branding but also as part of the historical presentation of the reproduction.

A separate hanger loop is installed directly above the label, providing a convenient point from which the jacket can be hung without placing the full weight of the garment on the collar itself.

Special Care for Buzz Rickson's Flight Jackets
Full washing, machine washing, tumble drying, and conventional dry cleaning are not recommended for Buzz Rickson's flight jackets. The garment combines multiple materials and construction layers, including the nylon shell, cotton lining, pile insulation, wool knit components, leather zipper pull, elasticized sections, and metal hardware.

Exposure to water, detergent, mechanical agitation, heat, or unsuitable cleaning solvents may cause different components to react at different rates. Possible changes include dimensional distortion, shrinkage, loss of loft, deformation of the insulated body or sleeves, changes to the knitted components, puckering, uneven surface appearance, or alteration of the jacket's overall silhouette.

The fabrics and construction are intentionally developed to reproduce the character of period military garments rather than to provide the dimensional stability of modern easy-care outerwear. For this reason, aggressive cleaning may significantly alter the shape, texture, and appearance that are integral to the design of the jacket.

If localized soiling occurs, spot cleaning may be considered instead of cleaning the entire garment. A small amount of neutral detergent may be diluted with water and applied carefully with a clean cloth to the affected area. Do not saturate the fabric unnecessarily.

Even spot cleaning may cause a localized difference in color, sheen, texture, or surface appearance. Before treating a visible area, test the cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous section of the garment and allow it to dry completely before proceeding.

For significant stains, widespread soiling, or any situation in which the appropriate treatment is uncertain, we recommend consulting a professional cleaner before attempting to clean the garment yourself.
