Tailor Toyo Men's 1950s Style Reversible Sukajan Souvenir Jacket, Cotton Velveteen and Quilted Acetate Satin, Insulated, Polar Bear and Alaska Map Embroidery (TT15974-145, Green)

Tailor Toyo

This men's reversible embroidered Japanese souvenir jacket, commonly known as a sukajan, is made in China and produced by Tailor Toyo, a Toyo Enterprises brand. The brand specializes in reproductions of vintage souvenir jackets as well as clothing and accessories inspired by the souvenir jacket style. Based on a late-1950s jacket originally made by Kosho & Co., Toyo Enterprises' predecessor, for sale at U.S. military base exchanges in Alaska, this model recreates the distinctive combination of polar bears, dog sleds, and an Alaska map associated with the style known as the Alaska souvenir jacket. Deep green 100% cotton velveteen on one side is paired with black and ivory 100% acetate satin on the reverse, with cotton-and-polyester batting between the two faces and diamond quilting on the satin side. Rayon embroidery, raglan sleeves, double-layer rib-knit trim, slanted double-welt pockets, and a metal zipper with pulls on both faces complete the reversible construction. A regular fit with moderate room through the torso, a short body length, and a rib-knit waistband gives the jacket its rounded, classic silhouette, carrying the materials and detailing of the original design into contemporary casual wear.

Size and Fit Guide:

Gender: Men.

The sizing of this jacket is generally closer to Japanese men's sizing than to standard U.S./EU sizing. As a result, the tagged size may fit somewhat smaller than the same letter size from many U.S. or European brands. As an approximate reference, a tagged size M would generally correspond to a U.S./EU men's size S, approximately a U.S. 36 or EU 46. This conversion is intended only as a general guide, since the appropriate size will also depend on body proportions, preferred fit, and the thickness of the clothing worn underneath.

The silhouette follows the classic proportions of a late-1950s souvenir jacket, combining a regular fit with moderate room around the torso and a relatively short body length. The stretchy rib-knit waistband sits gently around the waist and draws in the lower edge of the body. Together with the thickness of the batting, this creates a naturally rounded shape through the body when worn.

Raglan sleeves run diagonally from near the neckline to the underarms, creating a continuous line from the shoulder area into the upper arm without a conventional shoulder-to-sleeve seam at the shoulder tip. Stretchy rib-knit cuffs allow the sleeve openings to sit naturally around the wrists.

The jacket contains insulating batting, held in place by diamond quilting on the satin side. Because this padding adds thickness, the jacket may feel different from an unpadded, lightweight souvenir jacket with the same flat chest-width measurement. The thickness of your layers, your body proportions, and your preferred amount of room will also affect the fit. For the most useful comparison, please measure a similar jacket that fits you well, preferably one with comparable padding and construction, and compare its width, body length, and center-back sleeve length with the measurements below.

Our model wears Tagged Size M. He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. He typically wears a size S in U.S. and European brands, approximately a U.S. size 36.

The following measurements show the garment itself laid flat, not body measurements. Width is the straight-line distance across the body from side to side, approximately 3cm below the underarms. It is not the full circumference of the jacket or the wearer's chest measurement.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]

Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the jacket flat and measure straight across the body from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.

Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, at the seam where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom edge of the rib-knit waistband. The waistband is included; the height of the collar is not.

Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): Measured from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder area, and down to the end of the cuff. The full length of the rib-knit cuff is included.

Shoulder Width: Not measured. This jacket has raglan sleeves without conventional shoulder-to-sleeve seams at the shoulder tips, so a standard shoulder-width measurement is not provided. Please use the width, body length, and center-back sleeve length as the primary references when comparing sizes.

Made in China.
- Brand new, in unused condition.
- All measurements are taken by hand with the garment laid flat.

Tailor Toyo and the Japanese Souvenir Jacket Tradition
Tailor Toyo is Toyo Enterprises' souvenir-jacket label, continuing the history and design tradition inherited from Kosho & Co., the company's predecessor. The Japanese souvenir jacket, commonly called a sukajan, developed after World War II as American servicemen stationed in Japan had jackets embroidered as mementos of their time overseas. Designs included eagles, tigers, dragons, Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms, place names, and military unit names.

Kosho & Co. was involved in producing and supplying souvenir jackets from the early postwar years and played a significant role in the development of this clothing tradition. Tailor Toyo carries that history forward through reproductions that retain the materials, construction details, and embroidered imagery associated with period garments.

Late-1950s Alaska Souvenir Jacket Design
This model draws on a vintage souvenir jacket made by Kosho & Co. at the request of the U.S. military in the late 1950s and sold at PX stores, or military base exchanges, in Alaska. Its combination of polar bears against lightning motifs, dog-sled embroidery running along the sleeves, and an Alaska map on the reverse recreates the regional imagery associated with the style often called the Alaska souvenir jacket.

The reversible construction combines a pile-surfaced velveteen face with a quilted satin face, with insulating batting between them. Each side is designed to be worn outward, presenting a different fabric texture, color arrangement, and embroidery composition within the same jacket.

100% Cotton Velveteen with a Short, Dense Pile
The velveteen side uses deep green 100% cotton fabric throughout the body and sleeves. Velveteen is a woven pile fabric with short fibers closely covering its surface. This dense, short pile gives the cloth a soft surface appearance and a subdued sheen.

The pile reflects light differently depending on its direction and the angle of illumination. As a result, areas of the same green fabric can appear lighter or darker, creating tonal depth across the curved body panels and along the moving sleeves. These changes in shading are part of the appearance of the piled surface.

The lustrous rayon embroidery contrasts with the softer sheen of the velveteen. Individual stitches and overlapping threads add raised texture above the short pile, giving the embroidered motifs a dimensional appearance against the green ground.

100% Acetate Satin Reverse with Contrasting Body and Sleeves
The reverse is made from 100% acetate satin, combining a black body with ivory sleeves. The different colors make the diagonal raglan sleeve junctions clearly visible and give this side a different appearance from the uniformly green velveteen face.

The satin has a smooth surface and a reflective sheen that changes with the viewing angle, folds in the fabric, and the direction of the light. Its smooth, lustrous appearance contrasts with the short pile of the velveteen, allowing the reversible design to present two distinct fabric surfaces.

Cotton-Polyester Batting and Diamond Quilting
The insulating batting is composed of 80% cotton and 20% polyester. Positioned between the velveteen and satin faces, it adds thickness and contributes to the rounded body shape of the finished jacket.

On the satin side, intersecting diagonal rows of stitching form a diamond quilting pattern. These stitches secure the batting to the satin and help limit movement and uneven distribution of the fill inside the jacket.

The quilting lines sit slightly below the surrounding satin surface, while the batting gives the areas between the stitches a gently raised profile. The diamond stitching also crosses the embroidered sections, bringing the quilting lines and the individual embroidery stitches together on the same surface.

Reversible Metal Front Zipper with Pulls on Both Faces
The front closes with a metal zipper. The slider has a pull on each face, allowing the zipper to be operated with either the velveteen side or the satin side facing outward.

The rectangular metal pull tabs are stamped with "T.Y.E." and "TOKYO." Their shape and markings form part of the period-style hardware detailing used throughout this reproduction.

Raglan Sleeves with Lengthwise Contrast Panels on the Satin Side
The sleeves are joined to the body with diagonal seams running from near the neckline down toward the underarms. There is no conventional sleeve attachment seam at the shoulder tip, allowing the outline to continue gradually from the shoulder area into the upper arm.

On the satin side, the ivory sleeves incorporate black fabric panels running along their length. These contrasting sections add a lengthwise detail to the sleeves, while the black body and ivory sleeve areas emphasize the diagonal raglan construction.

Double-Layer Acrylic Rib-Knit Collar, Cuffs, and Waistband
The collar, cuffs, and waistband are made from 100% acrylic rib knit. Each rib-knit section is folded back on itself to create a double layer and then attached to the jacket, providing flexible, stretchy finishes at the neck, wrists, and lower body.

The rib-knit collar follows the curve of the neckline, with its two front ends meeting the upper portion of the zipper. Its curved shape forms a continuous knitted finish around the neck opening.

The waistband stretches to sit gently around the waist and draws in the bottom of the body. This gathered lower edge works with the short body length and the thickness of the batting to give the jacket its characteristic rounded silhouette.

The sleeve ends are finished with tubular rib-knit cuffs. Their knitted structure allows them to stretch around the wrists and hold the sleeve openings in a naturally close-fitting shape.

Slanted Double-Welt Hand Pockets on Both Sides
Both wearable faces have a hand pocket at each side of the waist. Each opening is set at a slant for hand access and finished with two narrow welts, one bordering each side of the opening.

On the velveteen face, the welts use the same green velveteen as the body, blending the pocket edges into the surrounding color and pile texture. On the satin face, the welts contrast with the body color, making the outlines of the pocket openings more visible.

The satin-side pocket openings have triangular reinforcement stitching at both ends. These stitched areas reinforce the points that receive repeated stress as hands are placed into and removed from the pockets.

Brand and Size Labels Inside the Left Velveteen-Side Pocket
The Tailor Toyo woven brand label and size tag are attached inside the left pocket on the velveteen side. Locating these labels within the pocket keeps them off the visible body surface regardless of which side of the jacket is worn outward.

100% Rayon Embroidery with Directional Stitching
The embroidery is worked in 100% rayon thread. Its luster reflects light differently from the velveteen and satin grounds, helping define the motifs against each fabric surface.

The direction of the stitches changes across different parts of the designs. As light reaches these differently oriented threads, it creates variations in brightness and shadow. The combination of directional stitching and overlapping threads gives the embroidery depth and texture.

Polar Bear and Dog-Sled Embroidery on Green Velveteen
The velveteen side features polar bears with lightning motifs on the chest and back, together with dog-sled embroidery extending along both sleeves. The placement carries the Alaska-themed imagery across the front, back, and length of the arms.

Surviving period souvenir jackets made from green velveteen are uncommon. This reproduction recreates the distinctive combination of that historical green colorway and the Alaska-themed embroidered designs.

Alaska Map Embroidery on the Satin Reverse
The back of the satin side features an embroidered map of Alaska. Place names are accompanied by imagery including Dall sheep, an igloo, and Mount McKinley, combining regional animals, structures, and scenery within the map design. The diamond quilting passes through the embroidered area, allowing the map imagery and quilted surface texture to remain visible together.

Made in China
This Tailor Toyo jacket is made in China. Its cotton velveteen and acetate satin faces offer different textures and color arrangements, while the Alaska-themed rayon embroidery gives each side its own visual character.

Insulating batting, diamond quilting, reversible zipper hardware, double-welt pockets, and rib-knit trim bring together the construction details associated with the original souvenir-jacket style. The result preserves the design tradition inherited from Kosho & Co. and the distinctive character of the late-1950s Alaska jacket in a newly made reproduction for everyday casual wear.

Sukajan History

- The "sukajan" (Japanese souvenir jacket) is a unique piece of postwar history that blends American and Japanese culture. The name is widely believed to come from the phrase "Yokosuka jumper," referring to the Yokosuka area near a U.S. Navy base in Japan, where these jackets became widely known. After World War II, many American servicemen stationed in Japan ordered custom jackets as memorable keepsakes to bring home. Japanese makers embroidered these jackets with bold, detailed designs, often featuring motifs such as eagles, dragons, cherry blossoms, Mt. Fuji, and tigers. The result was a distinctive mix of American military imagery and traditional Japanese artwork.

- In the early years, embroidery was sometimes added to existing military or bomber-style jackets. Over time, souvenir jackets were increasingly made using glossy satin fabrics, especially acetate and rayon satin, and sometimes silk, as well as cotton velveteen, which gave them an eye-catching look and made the embroidery stand out even more.

- Sukajan later gained popularity in Japan as well, especially from the 1960s through the 1970s, becoming closely associated with youth fashion and rebellious subcultures. Depending on the era and the wearer, the jacket carried layered meaning: a reminder of postwar memories and American influence for some, and a symbol of individuality and nonconformity for others.

- Today, sukajan continues to be appreciated worldwide as wearable art, valued for its craftsmanship, cultural significance, and bold embroidered storytelling.

- Tailor Toyo (a label under Toyo Enterprises) is deeply connected to this history. The company, originally known as KOSHO & CO., supplied souvenir jackets to PX (Post Exchange) stores on U.S. military bases and has preserved sukajan-making tradition since the 1940s. In 1965, Toyo Enterprises was formally established, carrying that legacy forward under the Tailor Toyo name.

Care Instructions
Do not wash at home, either by hand or machine.
Do not bleach.
Do not tumble dry.
Do not iron.
Professional dry cleaning with petroleum-based solvents is permitted using a mild process.
Do not wet clean.
Please consult a professional cleaner before cleaning this garment.

This is a delicate garment that reproduces the fabric textures, color combinations, stitching, embroidery, and zipper details of vintage souvenir jackets. The appearance of the velveteen changes with the direction of its pile, and rubbing or pressure may flatten the fibers or leave visible marks. Avoid strong friction or prolonged pressure on the same area during wear and storage.

The acetate satin may develop surface abrasion or pulled threads if rubbed or snagged. Take care around bags, accessories, hook-and-loop fasteners, and sharp objects. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or artificial lighting, as well as storage conditions, may cause fading or discoloration.

Fine puckering, wrinkles, or unevenness may appear around the embroidery and quilting where the stitching draws on the fabric. Individual garments may also vary in the appearance of embroidery stitches, outlines, overlapping threads, and thread ends. Do not pull hard on or cut protruding embroidery or quilting threads.

Always follow the care instructions attached to the actual product. Because the jacket combines cotton velveteen, acetate satin, rayon embroidery, cotton-and-polyester batting, and acrylic rib knit, avoid rubbing or pulling forcefully on any one area.

Important Notes
- Our inventory is shared among our physical retail store and multiple online stores, so inventory changes may not always be reflected immediately on each website.
