Product Description in English.
Sugar Cane Men's Vintage-Inspired 9 oz. Wabash Stripe Work Coat, 100% Cotton Indigo Fabric, Unlined Chore Jacket, Made in Japan (SC15658, Navy, 421A One-Wash)
Sugar Cane
This men's Wabash stripe work coat is made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a Toyo Enterprises brand specializing in vintage-inspired American workwear. Based on post-World War II work coats, this unlined chore jacket is made from 9 oz. indigo-dyed 100% cotton fabric with fine, discharge-printed dotted stripes. Its construction combines a five-button front, a turn-down collar with a separate collar stand, two-piece set-in sleeves with reinforced buttoned openings, asymmetrical chest pockets, reinforced lower front pockets, a right-side interior pocket, and a two-panel back with a center seam. Stamped metal buttons, period-style cloth labels, and boot-motif logo prints on the fabric reverse carry the workwear detailing into areas that are less visible during wear. The one-wash finish softens the fabric's initial crispness while preserving its moderate body and flexibility. A regular fit with moderate chest room and a hip-length body brings these details together in a practical light outer layer for contemporary casual wear, especially in spring and fall.
Size and Fit Guide:
Gender: Men.
The coat has a regular fit with moderate room through the chest and a body length that extends over the hip area. The body falls relatively straight from the underarms to the hem, without pronounced shaping at the waist. Its proportions are neither especially slim nor overly loose, giving it the straightforward silhouette of a classic work coat.
Compared with a cropped denim jacket, the longer chore-coat body provides more coverage around the hips. Set-in sleeves establish defined shoulder and armhole seams, while the lower front edges curve gently into the hem to create a rounded outline. With repeated wear and washing, the fabric gradually softens and settles into a more natural drape.
Actual fit will vary depending on your body type, the thickness of the layers worn underneath, and your preferred amount of room. Please measure a similar work jacket or chore coat that fits you well and compare its chest width, body length, center-back sleeve length, sleeve length from the shoulder seam, and shoulder width with the measurements below.
Our model wears Tagged Size 36. He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. For reference, he normally wears a US/EU size S/36.
The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements. Width is the flat measurement across the garment and represents half of the garment's chest circumference, not the full circumference or the wearer's chest size.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]
Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.
Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the hem. The collar height is not included in this measurement.
Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the sleeve opening.
Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam down to the end of the sleeve opening.
Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from one shoulder seam to the other.
Made in Japan.
- Brand new, in unused condition.
- All measurements are taken by hand with the garment laid flat, using a measuring tape.
- Please note that slight variations in measurements may occur due to individual garment differences and the measuring method.

Post-World War II Work-Coat Design and Unlined Construction
The design is based on classic work coats from the period following World War II. Its button front, asymmetrical utility pockets, hip-length body, and visible construction stitching reflect the practical character of American work clothing from that era.
The coat is unlined, leaving the reverse of the main fabric exposed on the inside. This single-layer construction keeps it suitable for use as light outerwear, particularly in spring and fall. The range of conditions in which it can be worn will depend on the layers chosen underneath.
9 oz. Indigo-Dyed 100% Cotton Wabash Stripe Fabric
The fabric is made from 100% cotton and has a weight of 9 oz., making it relatively light for a work-jacket fabric. It retains moderate crispness and body while remaining supple enough to bend and settle naturally during wear. This balance gives the coat structure without making the cloth excessively rigid.
Wabash stripes are a characteristic pattern of vintage American workwear, including garments historically worn by railroad workers. On this fabric, fine white dots are arranged in vertical rows across an indigo-dyed ground, creating the distinctive dotted-stripe appearance.
The pattern is produced by discharge printing, a process that selectively removes color from previously dyed fabric to form a design. Here, the light dots are created within the indigo ground, giving the cloth the dark-and-light contrast associated with traditional Wabash workwear.
As the coat is worn and washed, the indigo ground gradually fades. Areas subject to repeated rubbing can develop lighter wear marks and differences in shade, allowing the surface to acquire variations that reflect how the garment has been used.
One-Wash Finish
The coat is washed once during the finishing process. This initial wash softens the fabric's crispness while leaving enough body to maintain the work coat's shape, giving the cloth a more settled feel from the first wear.
Compared with an unwashed garment, this finish reduces the likelihood of substantial initial shrinkage during subsequent washing. Some additional shrinkage or other dimensional change may still occur, depending on the washing method, drying conditions, and differences between individual garments. Continued wear and washing will also allow the fabric to soften further and conform more naturally to the wearer.
Five-Button Front with Folded, Reinforced Facings
The front closes with five buttons, including the button at the neckline. The buttons are positioned on the wearer's right front, with corresponding horizontal buttonholes on the wearer's left. The lower front edges curve gently into the hem, giving the bottom of the opening a rounded outline.
The fabric along the front opening is constructed in two layers to create a double-layered front edge. Stitching runs along the inner edge of the facing from the collar area down to the front hem, securing the double-layered section directly to the body.
This layered construction reinforces the areas around the buttons and buttonholes, which are handled repeatedly when the coat is opened and closed. It also helps limit stretching and distortion along the front opening.
Turn-Down Collar with a Separate Collar Stand
The neckline uses a turn-down collar attached to a separate collar stand. The stand forms a raised band at the base of the collar, adding height where the collar meets the body.
This construction supports the folded collar above the neckline and gives the area around the neck a defined, three-dimensional shape.
Two-Piece Set-In Sleeves
Each sleeve is assembled from two fabric panels sewn together, then attached to the corresponding armhole in the body using set-in construction. The resulting seams define both the sleeve's panel construction and its connection to the shoulder and body.
Single-Button Sleeve Openings with Reinforced Slits
A slit extends upward from the end of each sleeve. One side of the opening has a single buttonhole, and the other has a single button that fastens the overlapping fabric. Releasing the button allows the slit to open wider, making it easier to pass the hand through when putting on or removing the coat.
The edge of the sleeve opening and the edges of the slit are finished with doubled fabric held in place by stitching. Near the upper end of the slit, curved stitching extends outward in gentle arcs to either side.
The top of the opening is also reinforced with several vertical lines of stitching and a horizontal bar tack. These stitches strengthen the area where pulling forces are concentrated as the sleeve opening is spread, helping resist tearing from the upper end of the slit.
Asymmetrical Chest Pockets and Buttoned Right Chest Flap
The two chest pockets have different shapes and constructions, a combination often described in Japanese workwear terminology as "gacha pockets." This asymmetrical arrangement brings together different storage functions across the front of the coat.
On the wearer's right chest, a patch pocket with a rounded lower section is covered by a flap. A vertical buttonhole at the center of the flap fastens over a button attached to the pocket itself, securing the flap over the opening.
Three-in-One Left Chest Pocket
The left chest has a patch pocket with a rounded lower section and three integrated storage compartments. The top-opening portion is divided into a narrow pen slot and a larger main compartment beside it.
An additional panel of the same fabric is layered over the main-pocket area and sewn in place. The space between this panel and the underlying pocket forms a third compartment, accessed through a vertically oriented opening at the side. Together, the two top-opening compartments and the side-entry compartment form the three-in-one arrangement.
The vertical side opening extends only as far as the Sugar Cane brand label sewn onto the pocket, limiting the length of the opening. This restricted opening appears intended to help keep small items, such as a pocket watch, from slipping out unintentionally.
The side entrance is formed by overlapping fabric, with a selvage edge of the cloth used along the inner edge of the opening. A size tag is also caught into the seam at the bottom of the left chest pocket, adding another detail associated with period workwear.
Large Lower Front Pockets with Internal Reinforcement
Two generously sized, open-top patch pockets are positioned at the lower front, one on each side. Their rounded lower sections continue the workwear styling, while their size provides space for everyday items.
A reinforcing fabric patch is sewn inside approximately the lower half of each pocket. This adds a second layer of material to that section of the pocket. The stitching that secures the top edge of the reinforcement is visible on the outside, making the internal construction part of the pocket's exterior appearance.
Bar-Tack Reinforcement at the Front Pocket Openings
The corners of the front pocket openings are reinforced with bar tacks. These concentrated sections of stitching secure points that are repeatedly stressed as items are inserted and removed, helping strengthen the mouths of the pockets.
Right Interior Pocket with Visible L-Shaped Attachment Stitching
An open-top interior pocket is sewn to the inside of the right front body. Its attachment stitching passes through to the exterior, where it forms an L-shaped line beside and below the right chest pocket.
The visible line shows how the interior pocket is attached behind the outer fabric. This relationship between inside storage and exterior stitching reflects the practical construction of traditional workwear, where functional sewing also defines the garment's appearance.
Printed Cloth Label Inspired by Vintage Workwear Tickets
A printed cloth label is sewn inside the right lower front pocket. Its design recalls the guarantee tickets and union labels found on vintage workwear.
Historically, such tickets could identify a manufacturer or carry a maker's quality guarantee, while union labels indicated that garments had been made by union members. On this coat, the period-style printed label brings that visual tradition into the pocket interior, extending the vintage-inspired detailing to an area that is usually hidden during wear.
Stamped Metal Tack Buttons
The buttons are made of metal and stamped with "Sugar Cane & Co." They are mechanically fastened through the fabric using a tack-style attachment, giving the front closure, chest-pocket flap, and sleeve openings the fixed metal-button construction characteristic of workwear.
Two-Panel Back with a Center Seam
The back is made from two body panels, one on each side, joined by a seam running down the center back. The visible seam defines the junction between these panels and forms a clear vertical construction line on the rear of the coat.
Interior Neck Patch with Visible Exterior Stitching
A cloth patch bearing the "SUGAR CANE & Co." design is sewn directly to the body at the inside neckline. The stitching that attaches the patch is also visible on the upper back, where it forms a rectangular outline on the exterior.
Scattered Boot-Motif Logo Prints on the Fabric Reverse
Boot-motif "SUGAR CANE" logos are printed at intervals across the reverse of the fabric. The design incorporates the wording "HIGHEST QUALITY" and "TRADE MARK," giving the marks the character of classic workwear branding.
Because the coat is unlined, these prints appear directly on the exposed reverse of the main fabric inside the garment. They add a subtle detail to the interior and continue the vintage-workwear theme in areas that are less visible when the coat is worn.
Visible Construction Stitching
Stitching follows the seams and component edges throughout the coat, visually defining how the fabric panels and individual parts are assembled. The lines around the front facings, pockets, sleeves, and back make the garment's construction visible as part of its overall appearance.
Made in Japan
Made in Japan, this Sugar Cane work coat combines the character of post-World War II American workwear with carefully developed fabric and detailed sewing. The 9 oz. Wabash cloth, reinforced openings and pockets, stamped metal buttons, and period-style labels create a consistent workwear design from the exterior to the inside.
Its unlined construction, regular fit, and one-wash finish bring these traditional details together in a light casual jacket that gradually develops its own texture and fading through wear.
Care Instructions
Machine wash on a very gentle cycle at a maximum water temperature of 30°C (86°F).
Do not bleach.
Do not tumble dry.
Line dry in the shade.
Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth.

- Actual color may vary slightly from the photos due to lighting conditions and individual screen settings.
