Buzz Rickson's Men's Sweatpants with U.S. Air Force Logo Print, No-Outseam Construction, Drawstring Waist and Hems, Straight-Leg Fit, Made in Japan (BR40973)
Buzz Rickson's
Available Colors
These men's military-inspired sweatpants are made in Japan by Buzz Rickson's, Toyo Enterprises' label specializing in detailed reproductions and interpretations of vintage American military clothing. Based on the practical construction of vintage American military physical-training sweatpants, they are made from medium-weight 100% cotton sweatshirt fabric with a softly brushed interior. The fabric is originally knitted in a tubular form rather than constructed from separate front and back panels. During production, the tubular fabric is opened along the inner-leg area and sewn to form the left and right legs. As a result, there are no conventional outseams running down the outer sides of the legs, while the principal leg seams appear along the inseams. At the crotch, where the inner legs meet, a stretch rib-knit gusset panel is inserted to provide additional flexibility and ease of movement. Additional details include two cut-in hand pockets with pocket bags made from brushed sweatshirt fabric, a wide rib-knit waistband with a flat drawcord, adjustable drawcords at the open leg hems, no front fly, and a U.S. Air Force and Langley A.F. Base graphic printed beside the left front pocket. The straight-leg fit provides moderate room through the legs without being excessively slim or loose. Combining classic military-inspired construction with a distinctive printed graphic, these sweatpants retain the character of vintage athletic wear while remaining easy to incorporate into modern casual outfits.
Size and Fit Guide:
Gender: Men.
Fit: These sweatpants feature a regular straight-leg fit with moderate room through the seat and thighs. The legs fall relatively straight from the knees to the openings without a pronounced taper. The shape is neither excessively slim nor overly loose, maintaining a balanced straight silhouette. When the hem drawcords are fully loosened, the leg openings remain uncinched and the straight line continues naturally from the knees to the hems. Tightening the drawcords gathers the fabric around the ankles and allows the lower-leg shape and opening to be adjusted. The rib-knit waistband provides natural stretch, while the flat drawcord allows the waist to be secured and adjusted. To ensure the best fit, please refer to the actual garment measurements listed below. All measurements are taken with the garment laid flat and are provided in both inches and centimeters. Slight variations may occur due to manual measurement and the flexible nature of the knit fabric. Fit may also vary depending on body shape, where the waistband is worn, preferred ease through the seat and thighs, desired leg length, and individual preference. For best results, we recommend comparing these measurements with a similar pair of sweatpants or pants you already own.
Available sizes: S, M, L, and XL.
[Approximate Size Reference]
The size information below is intended only as an approximate general guide based on the tagged pants size you usually select. Because the rib-knit waistband stretches and can also be secured with the flat drawcord, these references should not be treated as guaranteed body measurements or direct equivalents of the relaxed waist measurements shown in the tables. The most suitable size may vary depending on body shape, where the waistband is worn, preferred ease through the seat and thighs, and desired leg length.
Tagged Size S: Recommended for customers who usually select pants tagged W30.
Tagged Size M: Recommended for customers who usually select pants tagged W32.
Tagged Size L: Recommended for customers who usually select pants tagged W34.
Tagged Size XL: Recommended for customers who usually select pants tagged W36.
Please use the approximate references above only as a starting point. Because fit cannot be determined from the waist alone, please also consider the seat, thighs, total length, rise, inseam length, and your preferred amount of room. The actual garment measurements below should be used as the primary reference when selecting a size.
[Actual Garment Measurements]
For a more accurate sense of fit, please compare the measurements below with a similar pair of sweatpants or pants that fits you well. The inseam, front rise, and thigh measurements are listed as reference values because the rib-knit crotch gusset means that the pants do not have the clearly defined crotch seam junction normally used as the measuring point on conventional pants.
In inches
In centimeters
When selecting your size, please use the actual garment measurements as your primary reference rather than relying on the tagged size alone.
[How We Measure the Actual Garment]
The garment is laid flat, face up, and measured by hand with a measuring tape.
Waist: Measure straight across the top of the rib-knit waistband without stretching it, then double that measurement to obtain the full relaxed waist circumference. Because the waistband stretches and can be secured with the drawcord, this relaxed measurement does not represent the maximum wearable waist size.
Total Length: Measure from the top edge of the waistband to the bottom of the leg opening along the outer side. Because the pants do not have outseams, use the outer edge of the flat-laid garment as the measuring line rather than following a seam.
Inseam (Reference): A rib-knit gusset is inserted at the crotch, so the pants do not have the conventional central crotch seam junction or clearly defined starting point normally used for this measurement. Lay the pants flat and use the point where the left and right legs begin to separate as a provisional crotch reference point. Measure from this point to the bottom of one leg along the inner edge of the leg.
Front Rise (Reference): A rib-knit gusset is inserted at the crotch, so the pants do not have the conventional central crotch seam junction or clearly defined starting point normally used for this measurement. Lay the pants flat with the front facing up and use the point where the left and right legs begin to separate as a provisional crotch reference point. Measure from the top center edge of the front waistband to this reference point along the center of the front body.
Thigh (Reference): Lay the pants flat and use the point where the left and right legs begin to separate as a provisional crotch reference point. At approximately 3 cm, or 1.2 inches, below this point, measure straight across one leg from the outer edge to the inner edge.
Leg Opening: Fully loosen the hem drawcord, arrange the opening flat, and measure straight across the bottom of one leg from side to side.
The rib-knit crotch gusset means that the pants do not have the clearly defined seam junction normally used as the crotch measurement boundary on conventional pants. For this reason, the flat-laid point where the two legs begin to separate is used as a common provisional reference point. The inseam, front rise, and thigh measurements should all be treated as reference values. Slight differences may result from how the garment is positioned and how the reference point is established.
Please note that the actual relaxed waist measurement should not be treated as a direct equivalent of the customer's usual tagged pants size. The rib-knit waistband stretches, and the drawcord can be tightened to secure the waist. Fit also depends on the seat, thighs, total length, rise, inseam length, and individual preference.
Made in Japan.
Brand new and unused.
*All measurements are taken with the garment laid flat.
*Because the fabric is flexible and measurements are taken manually, slight variations may occur.
*Actual color may differ slightly from the photos due to lighting and screen settings.
Overall Product Character
These men's sweatpants are made in Japan by Buzz Rickson's, the military-wear label of Toyo Enterprises. The design draws from vintage American military athletic wear and physical-training sweatpants, with the emphasis placed on practical knit-garment construction, freedom of movement, and uncomplicated adjustment at the waist and hems.
The garment is made from 100% cotton and uses soft, supple, medium-weight sweatshirt fabric with a brushed interior. The starting fabric is knitted in a tubular form similar to fabric used for traditional seamless-body sweatshirts. That tubular fabric is then opened and shaped along the inner-leg area, sewn to form functional inseams, and fitted with a rib-knit crotch gusset. The original circumference of the tubular fabric is used across the outer sides of the legs, so the finished pants have inseams but do not require conventional outseams.
Additional construction details include two cut-in side-entry hand pockets, pocket bags made from brushed sweatshirt fabric rather than lightweight jersey, a wide rib-knit waistband with a flat drawcord, a pull-on front without a fly, and open leg hems with individual drawcord adjustments. The Air Force graphic printed beside the upper left front pocket provides the military athletic-wear reference and a restrained visual accent.
These construction features retain the functional character of vintage training wear while the balanced regular straight silhouette makes the pants practical for contemporary casual use.
Silhouette and Fit
The pants have a regular straight-leg fit rather than a close athletic taper or an oversized relaxed cut. The pattern provides moderate room through the seat and thighs, allowing the soft sweatshirt fabric to move without clinging closely to the body. From the knees to the leg openings, the legs descend in an almost straight line with very little taper.
Because the fabric is soft and supple rather than firm or crisp, the silhouette falls naturally and follows the wearer's movement instead of holding a rigid shape. With the hem drawcords fully loosened, the leg openings remain uncinched and continue the straight line from the knees to the hems.
Tightening the hem drawcords reduces the openings and gathers the fabric around the ankles. This allows the lower-leg shape to be adjusted for different footwear and styling preferences without changing the basic regular straight pattern of the pants.
The rib-knit waistband stretches to accommodate the body and can be secured with the flat drawcord. Because the waist is flexible and adjustable, size selection should also take into account the seat, thigh width, rise, total length, inseam reference length, and the wearer's preferred amount of room.
Medium-Weight 100% Cotton Sweatshirt Fabric
The garment is made from 100% cotton. The sweatshirt fabric has a medium-weight construction that is neither unusually thin nor excessively thick, but it does not have a pronounced firm, crisp, or rigid hand. Instead, it feels soft and supple, allowing the material to fold, drape, and move naturally with the body.
Unlike woven trouser fabrics such as denim or military twill, sweatshirt fabric is formed from interlocking knitted loops. This looped construction gives the material natural flexibility and allows it to respond more readily to bending, sitting, and leg movement. The medium weight provides more thickness than lightweight jersey while retaining the pliability expected from a sweatshirt knit.
On the exterior, the knit loops create a fine, closely spaced surface structure with natural cotton fibers visible across the face. The surface is not pressed or finished to appear perfectly flat and uniform. Small variations in the loops, fine surface fuzz, and slight changes in texture contribute to the natural appearance of the cotton knit.
Because the material is soft and flexible, it may relax slightly during wear and may show natural folds or gentle rippling when the pants are laid flat. These characteristics reflect the behavior of the knit fabric and should not be interpreted as evidence of stiffness, structural shaping, or a defect.
Softly Brushed Interior
The interior loop structure of the sweatshirt fabric is brushed to lift and separate the cotton fibers, creating a soft fleece-like surface. This brushing changes the exposed looped underside into a more diffuse layer of raised fibers, reducing the direct feel of individual loops against the skin.
The raised fibers hold small pockets of air within the interior surface, adding warmth without requiring a separate lining or insulating fill. The brushed layer remains flexible and moves together with the soft outer knit rather than functioning as a distinct lining material.
The height and density of the brushed fibers may vary slightly between different areas of the garment. Through repeated wear, pressure, friction, and washing, the fibers may gradually compress, lie flatter, or become less fluffy in frequently contacted areas. These are normal characteristics of brushed cotton sweatshirt fabric and do not indicate a defect.
Pants Construction Using Tubular-Knit Sweatshirt Fabric
The starting material used to form the waist-to-leg portion of the pants is sweatshirt fabric that was originally knitted as a continuous tube. This is the same general type of circular-knit fabric associated with traditional sweatshirt bodies that do not require side seams at the torso. In this garment, however, the tubular fabric is used as the starting material for making pants; the finished pants and the individual legs are not completely seamless tubes.
Conventional pants are generally cut from separate front and back pattern pieces. Those pieces are joined along the outer sides to form outseams and along the inner sides to form inseams. This model uses the circumference of the original tubular-knit fabric differently. The fabric remains continuous across the outer sides of the legs, allowing the front-facing and back-facing areas to connect around the outside without conventional outseams.
To form two separate legs, the tubular fabric is cut open and shaped through the inner-leg area. The resulting cut edges are sewn to create functional inseams running along the inside of the left and right legs. A separate rib-knit gusset is inserted at the upper ends of those inseams to complete the crotch construction.
The accurate distinction is therefore that the pants are constructed from originally tubular-knit sweatshirt fabric and have no conventional outer-leg seams, while still retaining clearly sewn inseams and additional seams around the crotch gusset. The uninterrupted outer-leg surface is a result of how the tubular fabric is used in the pattern, not an indication that the completed pants are entirely seamless.
Inseams and Rib-Knit Crotch Gusset
Each finished leg has a sewn inseam running along its inner side. These inseams are created after the originally tubular-knit sweatshirt fabric is cut open through the inner-leg area. They define the inner edges of the two legs and continue upward toward the separate rib-knit panel inserted at the crotch.
The rib-knit crotch gusset occupies the central area between the upper ends of the left and right inseams. Instead of bringing the inseams and conventional front and back rise seams together at one concentrated junction, the construction distributes that area across the inserted panel and its surrounding seams.
The rib structure can extend more readily than the surrounding sweatshirt fabric, allowing the gusset to respond to repeated opening, bending, sitting, stepping, and other movements that place tension across the crotch. By distributing movement across the insert and the seams around it, the gusset helps reduce concentrated pulling at a single seam junction.
The gusset does not remove the inseams themselves. Rather, it changes the way their upper ends meet the crotch area. Because there is no single, clearly defined crotch seam junction corresponding to the measuring point used on conventional pants, the inseam, front rise, and thigh measurements are treated as reference values. The flat-laid point where the left and right legs begin to separate is used as the provisional reference point for those measurements.
Four-Needle Flatseamer Construction
Four-needle flatseamer stitching is used at key joining areas, including the attachment of the rib-knit waistband, the inseams, and the seams surrounding the rib-knit crotch gusset. These are areas where flexible knit sections meet and where thick, raised seam allowances could otherwise create localized bulk.
The flatseamer joins the fabric sections while keeping the seam profile comparatively low and distributing the stitch formation across a wider joined area. Compared with a conventional seam that leaves folded or stacked allowances projecting toward the inside, this construction helps reduce pronounced ridges, concentrated thickness, and the feeling of a raised seam against the body.
This construction does not mean that the joined areas are seam-free. Multiple rows of stitching remain clearly visible on the exterior and form part of the actual structural connection between the fabric sections. The stitch formation is able to accommodate the movement of the sweatshirt knit and rib-knit components more readily than a rigid, non-stretch seam construction.
Because the stitch lines remain visible along the waistband, inseams, and gusset area, the functional construction also becomes an exterior design element. The same stitching therefore serves both a structural purpose and the technical visual character associated with vintage athletic wear.
Cut-In Side-Entry Hand Pockets
Two hand pockets are positioned at the left and right sides of the front portion of the pants. Because the tubular-knit sweatshirt fabric remains continuous across the outer sides and there are no conventional outseams, the pocket openings cannot be formed by leaving sections of an outer-leg seam open in the manner used on many conventional pants.
Instead, each side-entry opening is cut and finished directly within the continuous sweatshirt fabric. A separate pocket bag is attached behind the opening on the inside of the garment. This cut-in construction provides access at the sides of the front while preserving the uninterrupted no-outseam configuration along the outer legs.
The internal pocket bags are made from the same type of brushed sweatshirt fabric used throughout the surrounding pants. As a result, the pocket bags have a soft interior surface and a thickness consistent with the surrounding sweatshirt construction.
No rear pockets are included. The storage layout is therefore limited to the two front side-entry hand pockets, keeping the back construction visually and structurally uncomplicated.
Wide Rib-Knit Waistband and Flat Drawcord
The waist is finished with a wide rib-knit band joined to the sweatshirt fabric around the upper edge of the pants. The alternating raised and recessed columns of the rib structure allow the band to expand around the body and recover toward its relaxed shape without using the rigid construction of a woven trouser waistband.
A flat drawcord runs through the interior of the waistband and exits at the front through two buttonhole-style openings. The stitching around each opening contains the cut edge, reinforces the area repeatedly contacted by the cord, and helps reduce distortion or fraying as the drawcord is tightened and released.
The rib-knit band provides the initial stretch and contact around the waist, while the drawcord allows the wearer to reduce the effective circumference and secure the fit. For this reason, the relaxed flat measurement of the waistband does not represent the maximum wearable waist size, and adjacent tagged sizes may accommodate partially overlapping waist ranges.
Size selection should not be based on the relaxed waist measurement alone. The seat, thigh width, front rise reference, total length, inseam reference length, and the wearer's preferred amount of room should also be considered.
Pull-On Construction Without a Front Fly
The front does not include a zipper, button fly, snap closure, or separate fly opening. The pants are put on by stretching the rib-knit waistband over the hips, after which the flat drawcord can be tightened and tied to secure the waist.
This pull-on arrangement reduces the number of rigid components at the front and is consistent with athletic and physical-training garments intended for uncomplicated dressing and unrestricted movement. It also allows the front sweatshirt fabric to remain visually continuous apart from the waistband connection, drawcord openings, pocket openings, gusset seams, and printed graphic.
Adjustable Open-Bottom Leg Hems
The leg openings are finished without elastic cuffs or rib-knit ankle bands. Each opening retains the full width established by the regular straight pattern when its drawcord is completely loosened, allowing the lower leg to fall naturally toward an open hem rather than contracting around the ankle.
A separate flat drawcord runs through the channel formed within each hem. Pulling the cord reduces the circumference of the opening and distributes gathers around the lower leg. The left and right hems can be adjusted independently, allowing the wearer to control the amount of opening around different footwear or to change the lower-leg silhouette.
Each hem drawcord exits through a buttonhole-style opening reinforced in the same general manner as the openings at the waistband. The reinforced stitching contains the cut edge and helps the knit fabric withstand repeated contact with the moving cord.
U.S. Air Force and Langley A.F. Base Graphic
An Air Force graphic is printed directly on the sweatshirt fabric at the upper left front, beside the left-hand pocket. Its position places the graphic within the upper thigh area without interrupting the pocket opening or the no-outseam outer-leg construction.
The design combines a winged-star emblem with the words U.S. AIR FORCE, LANGLEY A.F. BASE, and VIRGINIA. The compact placement and straightforward typographic treatment reference identification graphics associated with American military athletic and physical-training garments.
The print serves as the primary visual element on an otherwise construction-focused design. It works together with the visible flatseamer stitch lines, rib-knit components, and practical drawcord details to give the pants their vintage military athletic-wear character.
Made in Japan
These sweatpants are made in Japan from 100% cotton, using soft and supple medium-weight sweatshirt fabric with a brushed interior and rib-knit cotton components at the waistband and crotch.
The construction begins with originally tubular-knit sweatshirt fabric. The fabric remains continuous across the outer sides to avoid conventional outseams, while the inner-leg area is cut and sewn to form functional inseams and is completed with a separate rib-knit crotch gusset.
Four-needle flatseamer stitching at key joined areas, cut-in pockets formed directly within the continuous outer-side fabric, a wide rib-knit drawcord waistband, a pull-on front, independently adjustable open hems, and the printed military graphic bring together specialized knit-garment construction and the practical design language of vintage athletic wear.
