Product Description in English.
Sugar Cane Men's Vintage-Inspired 10.5 oz. Cotton and Sugarcane Fiber Denim Work Coat, Unlined Chore Jacket, Made in Japan (SC15920, 421A Indigo, One-Wash)
Sugar Cane
This men's denim work coat is made in Japan by Sugar Cane, a Toyo Enterprises brand specializing in vintage-inspired American workwear. Based on work coats from the early 20th century, it is constructed from 10.5 oz. indigo denim woven from a blend of 85% cotton and 15% sugarcane fiber. The unlined construction combines five removable metal front buttons, a turn-down collar without a separate collar stand, two-piece set-in sleeves with reinforced adjustable openings, five practical pockets, and a two-panel back with a center seam. A slanted left chest utility pocket with a dedicated pen holder and visible stitching around the interior pocket give the coat the functional character of early work clothing. The one-wash finish softens the fabric's initial crispness while preserving its body, subtle slubs, and pale neps. The classic regular fit provides moderate room through the chest, while the body length falls around the hips. Together, these proportions create a comfortable, practical silhouette that makes this vintage-inspired work coat suitable for everyday casual wear.
Size and Fit Guide:
Gender: Men.
The coat has a classic regular fit with moderate room through the chest and a body length designed to cover the hip area. It is balanced between a close, slim cut and an oversized silhouette. The body falls relatively straight from the underarms toward the hem, without pronounced shaping at the waist. Its longer chore-coat proportions extend below the waist, giving it the outline of a traditional work coat rather than a cropped denim jacket.
The set-in sleeves are sewn into the body's armholes, creating defined shoulder seams. At the lower front, the edges curve gently from the bottom of the button opening into the hem, giving the front outline a softly rounded shape.
The construction reflects the practical need for ease of movement in workwear. Although the woven denim does not stretch, it gradually softens and conforms through wear and washing. Its surface color and the appearance around the stitched areas also develop over time, adding to the denim's individual character.
The fit will vary with your body type, the thickness of the layers worn underneath, and your preferred amount of room. To help you choose a size, please measure a similar work jacket or chore coat that fits you well and compare its chest width, body length, center-back sleeve length, shoulder-to-sleeve-end length, and shoulder width with the measurements below. Please allow room for your intended layers, as this is a non-stretch woven fabric.
Our model wears Tagged Size 36. He is 175 cm / approximately 5'9" tall, weighs 59 kg / approximately 130 lbs, and has a 91 cm / approximately 36" chest. For reference, he normally wears a US/EU size S/36.
The following measurements show the garment itself, not your body measurements. Width is the flat measurement across the garment and represents half of the garment's chest circumference, not the full circumference or the wearer's chest size.

[How We Measure the Actual Garment]
Width (Chest Width / Half Chest): Lay the garment flat and measure straight across from side to side, approximately 3cm (about 1.2 in.) below the underarms.
Length (Body Length): Measured from the base of the back collar, where the collar joins the body, straight down to the bottom of the hem. The height of the collar is not included.
Sleeve (Center-Back Sleeve Length): The first sleeve measurement is taken from the center back at the base of the collar seam, across the shoulder, and down to the end of the sleeve opening.
Sleeve in Parentheses (Sleeve Length from Shoulder Seam): The sleeve measurement shown in parentheses is taken from the top of the shoulder seam down to the end of the sleeve opening.
Shoulder (Shoulder Width): Measured straight across the back from the outer edge of one shoulder seam to the outer edge of the other.
Made in Japan.
- Brand new, in unused condition.
- All measurements are taken by hand with the garment laid flat, using a measuring tape.
- Please note that slight variations in measurements may occur due to individual garment differences and the measuring method.
- Actual color may vary slightly from the photos due to lighting conditions and individual screen settings.
Early-20th-Century Work Coat Design and Unlined Construction
The design draws on the practical construction of American work coats from the early 20th century. Its button front, varied pocket arrangement, and hip-covering length retain the character of that workwear tradition, while the regular fit makes the coat suitable for contemporary casual wear.
The coat is unlined, allowing the relatively lightweight 10.5 oz. denim to form the main structure without an additional lining layer. It can be worn as a light outer layer from spring into early fall, with further opportunities for wear throughout the year depending on the weather and the layers worn with it.
10.5 oz. Denim with 85% Cotton and 15% Sugarcane Fiber
The fabric is a non-stretch indigo denim woven from a blend of 85% cotton and 15% sugarcane fiber. It weighs 10.5 oz. and uses No. 9 yarns for the lengthwise warp and No. 11 yarns for the crosswise weft.
The warp yarns are indigo-dyed, while the weft yarns retain their natural, undyed ecru color. Small glimpses of these lighter weft yarns appear between the indigo warp yarns, creating fine tonal variation across the face of the fabric. This interaction gives the denim a subtly mottled, almost heathered appearance while maintaining its overall indigo character.
The depth of color comes from the relationship between the darker and lighter yarns within the woven structure. The result is a restrained indigo tone with visible variation rather than a uniformly flat surface.
Slubbed Texture, Pale Neps, and a Supple Yet Structured Hand
Subtle variations in yarn thickness create small slubs across the surface, accompanied by scattered pale neps, fine surface fibers, and irregular shifts in tone. Together, these features give the cloth a textured appearance associated with vintage workwear.
The pale neps add a lightly flecked effect to the indigo ground. Their appearance combines with the visible ecru weft and uneven yarn texture to produce a rustic, workwear-oriented character.
At 10.5 oz., the denim is relatively lightweight while retaining moderate crispness and body. It also has enough suppleness to bend and settle during wear. This balance gives the coat a defined shape without the heavier feel of a more substantial denim outer layer.
One-Wash Finish and Gradual Indigo Aging
The coat is washed once as part of the finishing process. This initial wash softens some of the fabric's crispness while leaving enough body to support the work-coat shape, giving the garment a more settled feel from the first wear.
Compared with an unwashed garment, the one-wash finish reduces the likelihood of substantial initial shrinkage. It does not rule out further dimensional changes: some additional shrinkage or variation may occur depending on subsequent washing and drying conditions and differences between individual garments.
With repeated wear and washing, the fabric gradually becomes more familiar to the wearer, while the indigo develops natural fading and tonal contrast. Changes in the fabric surface and around the stitched areas contribute to the coat's evolving denim character.
Five-Button Front with Folded Denim Facings
The front closes with five buttons, including the top button at the neckline. From the wearer's perspective, the buttons sit on the right front edge, with corresponding horizontal buttonholes on the left. The lower front edges curve gently into the hem, creating the rounded outline of the coat's front opening.
The denim is turned inward along the opening and secured with stitching to form a double-layer front edge. These folded facings continue up to the neckline. The stitching that secures their edges follows a gently curved path from the upper front toward the lower hem, making the facing construction visible from the outside.
The overlapping layers reinforce the fabric around the buttons and buttonholes, where repeated opening and closing place stress on the cloth. They also help the front opening retain its shape and limit stretching or distortion along the edges.
Removable Antique-Finish Metal Change Buttons
The five front buttons are metal buttons with an antiqued finish. Each uses a removable change-button attachment: a loop-shaped metal shank on the back of the button passes through an attachment hole in the front edge and is secured from the inside with a metal retaining ring.
Removing the retaining ring releases the button, allowing it to be detached or replaced without cutting and resewing an attachment thread. The buttons can also be removed for laundering to reduce strain on the hardware and surrounding fabric.
This construction reproduces a practical fastening system found on vintage workwear that required frequent washing and repair. Its function is reflected in the separate button, shank, and retaining-ring components, while the aged metal finish contributes to the coat's period-inspired appearance.
Turn-Down Collar without a Separate Collar Stand
The collar is sewn directly to the body's neckline without a separate collar stand. This allows it to turn back relatively flat around the neck instead of rising on a distinct standing band.
When all five front buttons are fastened, the front closes up to the neckline and reduces the opening at the throat. Leaving only the top button undone and turning the upper front edges outward creates a V-shaped opening. The collar points and folded front edges then form an outline that resembles notched lapels.
The facings extend up to the neckline, supporting this change in how the front is worn. Adjusting the top button and the way the front edges are turned back changes the appearance around the collar.
Two-Piece Set-In Sleeves
Each sleeve is assembled from two fabric panels and sewn into the corresponding armhole in the body. This set-in construction creates a defined seam where the sleeve meets the shoulder and body, while the seam joining the two sleeve panels forms part of the coat's visible construction.
Two-Position Sleeve Openings with Reinforced Slits
A slit extends upward from each sleeve end, allowing the fabric to overlap and close with a button. One side has a single horizontal buttonhole, while the opposite side carries two metal buttons at different fastening positions. Choosing between the two buttons changes the amount of overlap and provides two settings for the fit around the wrist.
When unbuttoned, the slit opens more widely so the hand can pass through more easily when putting on or removing the coat. The sleeve-end edge and the edges of the slit are turned inward and secured with stitching, creating a folded finish around the opening.
Gently curved stitch lines extend from near the top of the slit toward both sides of the sleeve opening. Near the upper end of the slit, multiple lengthwise stitch lines and a horizontal bartack provide additional reinforcement. This supports the area subjected to repeated pulling as the opening is spread or the hand passes through, helping limit tearing from the top of the slit.
Fixed Metal Sleeve Buttons with Raised Brand Lettering
The sleeve buttons also have an antiqued metal finish, but their attachment differs from that of the removable front buttons. They are fixed to the fabric with metal tacks rather than held in place by removable retaining rings.
The button faces carry the brand logo in raised, decorative lettering. The relief of the lettering and the subdued metal tone add detail around the wrists while continuing the coat's classic workwear appearance.
Five-Pocket Layout and Open-Top Right Chest Pocket
The coat has five pockets in total: one on each side of the chest, one on each side of the lower front, and one inside the wearer's right front body panel.
The right chest pocket is an open-top patch pocket sewn onto the exterior of the coat. Its straightforward opening contrasts with the more specialized construction of the utility pocket on the opposite side.
Slanted Left Chest Utility Pocket with a Separate Pen Opening
The left chest pocket has a five-sided, home-plate-shaped outline and is attached at an angle. The portion of its upper edge nearest the front opening is stitched closed and does not serve as an entrance to the pocket. Excluding the dedicated pen opening, there is only one access opening, located along part of the slanted upper edge.
Stitching near the top partially divides the upper portion of the main storage area, but it does not separate the interior into fully independent compartments. The main pocket remains connected as a single storage space. This partial closure appears intended to help keep small items from falling out.
On the outer side of the pocket, toward the coat's side seam, an additional stitch line defines a narrow pen holder. This section has its own entrance for inserting a pen, keeping that dedicated opening distinct from the main storage opening.
Large Lower Patch Pockets with Bartack Reinforcement
Large open-top patch pockets are positioned on both sides of the lower front, providing accessible storage for everyday items. Their size and placement reflect the practical carrying needs associated with a work coat.
Bartacks reinforce the upper corners of each pocket. These concentrated rows of stitching strengthen the points where pulling forces are applied as items are inserted or removed, supporting the pocket openings during repeated use.
Interior Right Pocket with Externally Visible Attachment Stitching
An open-top interior pocket is sewn to the inside of the wearer's right front panel. Its attachment stitching passes through the body fabric and is visible on the exterior, forming an outline around the sides and lower edge of the external right chest pocket.
This visible stitching makes the relationship between the inner and outer pockets readable from the outside. It is a functional construction detail that also contributes to the layered arrangement of stitch lines on the front of the coat.
Two-Panel Back with a Center Seam
The back is made from separate left and right body panels joined along the center back. The resulting vertical seam defines the two-panel construction and adds a clear structural line to the rear of the coat.
Sewn-On Neck Patch with Visible Back Stitching
A cloth patch bearing the "SUGAR CANE & Co." design is sewn directly to the inside of the body at the back neck. Its attachment stitches also show on the outer upper back, where they form a rectangular outline.
This detail allows the way the interior patch is attached to remain visible as part of the coat's exterior stitchwork.
Vintage-Style Printed Labels inside the Pocket Opening
Printed cloth labels are sewn inside the opening of the interior pocket. Their designs recall the guarantee tickets and union labels found on vintage workwear.
Historically, labels of this kind served different purposes: some identified the manufacturer or stated a maker's quality guarantee, while union labels indicated that a garment had been produced by union members. Here, the period-inspired label designs extend the coat's classic workwear character to details on the inside.
Visible Stitching along the Garment's Construction Lines
Stitching follows the seams and joins throughout the coat, outlining the relationship between its fabric panels and components. Along with the visible interior-pocket and neck-patch stitching, these lines make the garment's construction an integral part of its appearance.
Made in Japan
Sugar Cane model SC15920 is made in Japan. Its cotton and sugarcane fiber denim, removable front buttons, adjustable sleeve openings, varied pocket structures, and visible stitchwork bring together the material and construction details of a vintage-inspired work coat.
The one-wash finish, unlined body, and regular proportions give these practical details a natural place in contemporary casual wear, while the indigo denim continues to develop through use.
